I am currently working on my 87’ FJ60 to make it a decent overland rig. My obvious concern is fuel mileage. I’m hoping to rebuild the stock 2F instead of a V8 swap. I’ll most likely add the GM TBI. I was also thinking of possibly having a larger fuel tank custom made some how. Has anyone done anything like that or heard of it being done? I am planning on mounting the spare tire on the rear or up top so I’ll have a pretty large void next to the existing tank. Thanks!

Cruiser brothers is the NA distributor for long range automotive. They have a 40 gal primary tank and a 15 gal aux tank.

That 15 Gal AUX would be sweet. Located between the axles

I put the Man-a-fre 38 gallon tank in.....and.... I have never looked back —— except at gas stations. I am getting over 750 miles on a tank of diesel (and that’s in West - never a flat spot - Virginia). The cans on the back of my rig have water in them. Fuel belongs in your fuel tank. Water belongs on you aux tanks. The 38 gal tank is one of the best adds to your cruiser (just behind a diesel and a 5 speed). The departure angle is not affected by this tank- it actually places the fuel at the lowest achievable place in you vehicle. One thing to note though- at 8 lbs/gallon - you’ll see a difference in the squat of the truck from full to empty. So I place air ride helpers to manage the weight variance.

I just did 1500 miles in my truck in 3 days. This was Houston to Big bend. 700 miles one way, 10 hours in the truck.

The fuel stops in west Texas are about 60-100 miles apart. I stopped and filled up at about 125-150miles on the trip meter. Its really hard to sit in the truck that long. I carried 2-5 gallon fuel cans on the rack, and I didn't have to use them. I just filled up every time I saw fit and I was fine.

I could see myself owning a big Long range tank, but its not for fuel reasons...I can't really run it out of fuel and I can't run the truck for 500 miles at highway speed without my back going out.

All you gain is piece of mind. I stressed about fuel and it was a non issue. West Texas is pretty desolate too.

Thanks! I’ve only owned my 60 for a short time now. Haven’t done any long drives yet. I was wondering about the comfort of the stock seats. I will be replacing the seat bottoms with new high density foam. Hopefully that helps. I love my rig so far and will probably spend way too much making it overland worthy. I could easily be putting that same amount or maybe even less into a comfy 100 series but I love this style too much. Cheers!

Lots of people get seats from a junk yard - mine are from a Volvo - I think. Makes a huge different. You'll be able to squeeze a little mileage out of the 2F, but it's never going to get great mileage. It's one of the reasons people go with the 5.3L - same (or better) mileage and more power and less weight. But I can understand if you want to avoid that. I have the Man-a-fre tank and love it. Did the Rubicon and never hit it.

I don't even think the seat is uncomfortable. Mine are in great shape. It's just sitting in the same place for 1.5 hours gets to me. I don't have a bad back or anything like that.

I will end up with the big tank more because of the gunk that is probably floating around in my original tank.

What size tires do you have on your rig? I’m trying to figure out what size I can get on after lifting two more inches. Thanks.

33x10.5-15 BFG K02 with an OME heavy kit. It is the most common combination you will find on this site.

I ran them with a 280,000 mile saggy original suspension and they didn't rub. You'll be fine.
