I've got a thread looking for heater components in the classifieds and that started some chat so I've posted here.

I have a unknow vintage FJ55 Truck cab that I'm planning on building into a ratrod. I want it to be absolutely perfect mechanically and capable for any trail but I really want the look of the ratrod culture.

I've been slowly assembling pieces and deciding on chassis. I'm likely going to go with an FJ60 which is old school but more modern than the 55 chassis. We have plenty of BJ60's here in Canada, but I want wrapped headers, holley carb and chrome air cleaner.

The cab itself has 40 series quater windows grafted in and the rockers are 1/8 inch box steel.

The rear of the cab has been fabbed to accept the regular tailgate window and I have the regulator, glass, and channel. I'm hoping to have a rolling rear window.

I also have the sides of the box from an FJ45. The bottoms are gone but I'm hoping to use the tops to provide a hinged sidewall for my box and still have the factory 45 tiedown hooks

It's going to be long time to build. I have to find the donor still.

Cheers,

John

This is F _ _ king Bad Azz. I would lov to do one like this. The fj40 corner windows set thi thing off. DO IT JUSTICE MAN. don't half azz this one. Your on to something. Iv'e been looking at all the truck conversions on mud and none campair to this..... I can see your vision and it's nice. I don't really like the ratrod Idea tho. 4x4 and street machine just don't doo it for me. Get on the road or off.

Love it!!! I thought of going w/ the roundy corners, but I think I'm gunna try to do something a bit harder- more like the pig lines. But just the same, it is super cool:cool:

This ones going to cause some controversy. :D I was taking to the guy who publishes Canadian Hotrod magazine and he's never seen a four wheel drive rat, nor a toyota. He's interested in following the build. The thing that's working for me is that its already been chopped, the patina on the body rocks, and I get to do some fun things like painting checkers on the firewall, or flames or whatever. And I don't have to worry about rust.

Truck needs to be used though or there's no sense having it. It has to do this:https://forum.ih8mud.com/ca-bc-okan...cruisers/417144-whipsaw-september-2010-a.html

This is annual trip done with my 73 Series. And I'm going to build it to allow me to camp right out of it.

Cheers,
John

Sweet...

I dig hot rods as much as 4X4's. I've got a '30 Model A was working on before it took a back seat to my FJ55. I like your plans, especially the idea of the checkerboard firewall. Look forward to seeing it built.

I say add chrome straight pipes right through the hood, straight up!.... Ha ha haaaaaa! I love your concept. Where'd you get the truck cab?:smokin:

The cab came from a friend of mine who owns Cruiserland Enterprises ( Langley, BC)- he does a fair bit of service, build, and conversion work. Especially RHD to LHD conversions and JDM diesel swaps.

He had it for years, then I had it stored for 2 years at his place and I finally picked it up from him last weekend. Some local sold it to him.

I too like rods but can't afford one (would love to have a Model A tub) and I'm really a toyota geek so this will be a fun and very unusual project. Already sourced the rodded 2F (Crusierland) and will be wanting to find the right donor chassis.

Got some nic nacs that I've been collecting over years as well. Dummy grenade shifter knobs, Mack bulldog hood ornament. I plan to have very little bling but will chrome the grill - chrome mirrors, and find intersting signal lights. I did find 9mm cartridges that have been converted to valve stem caps. I've sourced a company that will make 16x10 steel wheels with the correct hub bore and bolt patten and will also take a dog dish hubcap. It would be cool to use the stock hubcaps if they fit. I also have a machine chain from a sawmill power plant that I will turn into a bullbar.

The trick is to make it cool but not overdone, built out of 90% toyota parts, and meet offroad ability. I'll be setting up some polls as the build gets going so the folks here can have a hand with the ideas.

Cheers,
John

Wow! Thanks for the pick tucker. This really helps with ideas for the box. I'm glad I have the 45 sides as I'm hoping to build an Aussie tray style.

Wonder what the axles and wheels are from. Could be unimog?

that pic also made me drool a few years ago when it was posted. I think I remember that it was not an actual truck but had been photochopped. seems too real to just be a photo alteration. can someone verify.
if it is real. would love to see more pics.

this thing is sick I'd like to do one like that and make the cab alittle longer for comfort. If the back glass goes up and down it the perfect truck, because you can put your beer cans in the bed with no problems. I thing this must be military, look at the axles and bolt patterns.

I heard it is a chop job.....the main cab is too short w/o going past the b pillar like 6-8" for a grown man to sit upright in it. The rear window should very well retain it's ability to serve as a beer portal,m I agree.

As I stated in the post, this is a chop (good one) that was done by TreeRoot a few years ago, the 55 was real (6AT/Volvo axles) minus the bed changes though.

Always wanted to bring it to life for real :D Hopefully gofast will do it for us all -

Tucker
