Can someone take a measurement for me? I need to know how long the wiring harness coming out of the tail lights is. I am re-wiring a set for a mud member. In the pic I attached, they look to be really long like 18 to 24 inches? White/Black to a ring terminal and Green and Green/Orange to male bullet connectors?
Last question: Was there a rubber plug that sealed the wires going into the light housing like on later model FJ40 tail lights?

Paul, I appreciate the pages from your manual! However they do not spec the OEM LENGTH of the pig tail coming out of the tail light housing.
To the person who can supply this measurement: I will provide you with a new set of tail light wires for the cost of shipping. All you have to do is solder two wires to the contact disk in the light, and solder the ground wire to the housing. (You will need at least a 100 watt solder iron to solder the ground wire.)

I do have one other question: For the Triangle Dome Light, where do the two Red/White wires originate from? I'm assuming one comes from dash switch and the other goes to ground somewhere? Where do they run through the body?

If you have this sub harness out of your truck, can you measure it's length, and tell me what connectors are on the other end from the light? Same deal as above: Free (for cost of shipping) interior light sub harness if you provide the exact dimensions and connectors used at each end.

Here's a photo of a left side lamp assembly. The green wires are 38cm long and the ground wire is 39.5cm. All measurements taken from edge of hole on housing to tip of bullet connector.

Note the extension on the ground wire with the ring terminal. The total length of the ground wire is 81cm from lamp housing to center of ring terminal.

The ones on my '64 measure 18" long. Neither of my tail lights have a grommet on the housing but that doesn't mean they never did. It probably would be better to come with them.

My '64 also does not have the triangular dome light but a centered circular one above the rear passenger's legs. Anyways, there should be a tube behind the dash and to the left of the ignition switch. This tube goes up the left front windshield pillar. Hard to feel but it is there barely sticking out. This is where the wiring for the dome light goes through. Snake it up through the tube and it should come out on top. I don't have a headliner so no problem seeing the wire but if a headliner is installed then you wouldn't see it.

OK Splangy you were first!
PM me with your address and I will get a set of these on the way to you. Interesting there appear to be differences in lengths for these? I will make your set to your measurements, but will make future sets 18" just to be sure. The end user can trim to their preferred length before soldering them to the bulb contact disk.

algeeba, I will also send you a set for pointing out that there are different lengths for the same year LV! I'll make yours 18". PM me with your shipping address.

Back to the dome light. I have never seen an LV in person so bear with me! You said this tube to feed the wire is on the left side of the dash? The interior light switch is on the middle of the dash so there has to be a wire going from the main cowl harness, to the dash switch (I need the length of this wire and the connector types on each end), then from the dash switch to this tube, up the tube and across the top. Is this a one piece wire from the switch to the light? Need the length for that also. Then the other RW wire going to the light connects to ground somewhere with a ring terminal? Need length of that also. I have included a drawing of how I think this is wired. I can't find a schematic that shows this dome light wiring for the 1964, though one does appear in the 1969 schematic. If you have a schematic earlier than 1964 that shows this I would like to have it!

Cool! Thanks Coolerman. I have to order some connectors from you, though, so may I
have some time to get a list of the connectors that I need?

Dome light (triangular) - approx. total length of a wire leading to this dome light would be about 86"

Dome light (round) - Approx. length is about 139". I only have a hot wire going from the rotary light switch to the dome light and I am grounding the dome light via the screws or with a wire. As I bought my wagon back in 1998, I don't remember how many wires were coming out of the dome light as the P.O. might have messed with it, but the power wire is just twisted on at this time. It didn't have the light switch that is present on the FJ40 and that is why I believe it just connected to the light switch, or even ignition switch, for power . The FJ55 dome light is a direct fit and is probably what was used for the FJ45 and carried over to the FJ55. There are two different type of connectors for the FJ55 dome light.

See attached. Red line is routing for round dome light and bright green is to triangular dome light. The light switch usually ends up at either of the locations where the red dots are. On the '64 I believe is supposed to be the top location.

The distances I measured along the roof line and down the windshield pillar are pretty good. From approx. the ignition switch to the light switch I measured along the dash and added an additional 9" (distance from switches to main harness at firewall).

I hope this helps but please let me know if you need anything else or more accurate measurements.

algeba, you the man! Just let me know what parts you need and I will include the tail light harnesses with the parts order.
One more question about the Dome Light: Does the wire have any kind of plastic of woven tubing to protect it on that long run?

In the 3 wagons I have had, there's has been no protection on the dome light lead.

Good to know!

I have another cool find concerning the tail lights I am making the harnesses for.
When I was unsoldering the old wires from the bulb contact disk look what I found printed on just ONE green wire out of the four: Got to be a date code as this is a 1964 FJ45LV. Never seen this on wires before.

Here is a pic of the completed light re-wire.
Yet another question: Anybody ever seen these lights populated with a third mini-bulb in that open hole? Assuming it was a third world or Euro rear fog light option?
