You just need the later model birfields to use the Aisin's you picked up. I'm 99% sure of that (it is POSSIBLE that you already have the late model birfs with your warns, not likely, but...)

Do the knuckles next week and I've got a set of the axle shafts/birfields that I'd be willing to let you take if you replace them within a few months, or I'd sell them for a not particularly market rate (read: expensive) or something.

Or just get some late model birfields from Classic cruisers, or cruiser outfitters or something. This would be a convenient time to do the swap, but not necessary (since you've got the grenades.. err... Warns).

Dan

Thanks Dan that would be great. I was thinking about my axles. Would it make sense to try and pull an axle or all the parts off say a 85 4Runner or Mini Truck front axle? The reason for this I know in the future once I need to get new brake pads I want to upgrade to 4Runner brakes. (might as well have the parts on hand) And the Aisin hubs I pulled from U-pull aren't in the best condition and may be missing parts, so I thought I would just sell those as parts to anyone looking for replacement parts. Thoughts?

Might not be a bad idea....

You don't need an '85 axle though. The gusseting on the 84-85 mini truck axle housings is beefier than the earlier years, but the internals are all identical as far as I know.

But then you have to deal with storing an axle until you are ready to pull it apart...

As for the 4-runner brake upgrade: I'm 99% sure those are the IFS calipers you want, so really all you'd be gaining with a mini-truck axle would be the large pattern knuckle, the aisin hubs, and the birfields. I'm pretty sure that you could upgrade the brakes with your current knuckles.

I'd call Kurt at Cruiser Outfitters tomorrow and see what he's got lying around, or get his opinion on it. He (or any of the real good cruiser shops) will know the answers. I'm just going off what I remember, not what I have bolted together (but I've got exactly those parts to bolt together--just haven't done it yet)

Dan

Okay it sounds like the best thing to do then is maybe sit tight on the brakes and get those whenever. I need to do more research on those anyway. I will give a call around to see what my possibilities are. I just looked up U-Pull and pay and it looks they have a lot of Mini Trucks in stock. I'll have to take a look and see if I can get a set of birfields. If they don't have them there is always All Mini Trucks to check in with, or I can just order some.

Dan is right with the calipers. You want IFS calipers with the two large pistons. They were found on V6 trucks and 4R, and on some 4cyl trucks/4R in the mid-90's. You will also need a 1" master cylinder.

What's missing from the hubs? As long as you have the 30-spline gear and the correct body you are good. You can use boneyard IFS hubs for parts as everything else will swap over. Don't get rid of anything yet until Dan or I can see what you have.

As we said before you don't need to rush into the mini/LC disk brake stuff. You have disk brakes now and the urgency isn't there.

Okay good information on the brakes and hubs. I think I may just rebuild my axles and if my hubs are easy to swap over when I am doing axles I will do it. I will make sure either you or Dan take a look at what I pulled.

You are right about the breaks. I am getting ahead of myself. Those can wait a while.

I'd suggest that if you are serious about the knuckle rebuild this week and possibly swapping to the Aisins, that doing it at my place might be a real good idea.

I've got LOTS of extra Aisin parts (and you thought you had the hard to find bits when we chatted earlier), to include a full set (or two) lying around and I'm sure we could work something out. Also, I've got a spare set of late model birfs that I would trade you if you could come up with some others within a few months, or sell them outright or something else....

I should be home tomorrow night, and I've got a LOT of time off next week (until the 13th), and I need to make a junkyard run at some point early next week. We could hit up the U-pull early next week to see what they've got.

Small world, but one of the things I want is a complete mini truck front axle (year doesn't matter--already have an '85 housing).

Other than the birfs, I'd bet we can do the whole knuckle job quickly, and super cheap (since you've already got the seals and whatnot).

Dan

Sounds like a good plan. The earliest I can do knuckles for sure is Monday the 10th because my Dad also wants to learn how to do knuckles. About going to the junkyard I can go on Wednesday the 5th after class because it is my last final of the semester, or anytime after that I am free for about 2 weeks and I plan on working on Land Cruisers the entire time.
