All,

Just a quick question before I head out to the mountains....

I currently have the stock V-8 fan, and also an electric fan running with my V8. My problem is that the stock fan always hits the shroud. I've cut it back, but if I cut it anymore, it's going to be gone, so to solve the problem, I figured i'd just take it off, but don't want bushes, etc...getting up and hitting my stock fan. So....what if i took the fan off, and just had the electronic fan runnin?

Would I have any overheating problems???

i'm running a taurus two speed fan...so far i've only used the low speed...it cools it down quick.
 
Are you saying it hits the shroud all the time or just under a heavy flex situation? Is this a new problem or has it always been there (i.e. if it's new I'm hinting something like a new motor mount might be the solution).

Rather than trimming on the shroud what about shimming the shroud to change location a little or even adjust the motor height?

Another option ... opt for a fan with a smaller diameter. They range in size from over 20 inches down to almost nothing.

Above all I wouldn't let the trip to the mountains be the testing grounds for overheating. If I had to guess the electric fan you're using isn't rated for high output.

I have never had an electric (only) be able to keep mine cool. Works good with a 4 blade chev fan and a shroud.
 
I second the Ford Taurus fan, they move a ton of air and you can runit by itself. There are fairly cheap at wrecking yards also, theres alot of those cars.

try the taurus fan...you'll be amazed. i let my motor run past the second hash mark on the oem gauge, then flipped the fan on...it cooled to below first hash within five minutes each time

Wish I could......With the automatic my engine is pushed too close to the radiator to fit the Taurus fan (Taurus fan is about 4 1/2 inches thick, my steel fan is about 2 1/2 inches from the rad). The local yard had a Taurus and I measures the crap out of it trying to figure how to get it to fit
 
Get a smaller fan with blades that have a steeper pitch. Mine was not cooling correctly untill I changed fans.
 
What thermostat do you run? I run a 195 in my 40 with a 350, 4 blade fan, no clutch and I run on the stat all day long, feeways or crawling. The only time I warm up is in the very deep snow. Good luck.

dang and i thought my setup was tight...

No, it just hits when it's flexing. Sometimes when i'm coming off the line, or if I'm out wheeling..it just seems to hit.
 
could you set it up as a pusher?? Thats what I did and it seams to work fine.
 
mine doesnt like to kool with the elctric fan only either, yoda do you heat up when crawling?
 
Pusher fans are less efficient. WHile an electric fan can cool a small block it does need to be strong ... such as a Black Magic or Taurus fan. They do have wonderful advantages ... less drag, water crossings, etc. But the mechanical fan will pull more air.

DW if you can't shim the shroud or engine to adjust it just go for a smaller fan. Do not use a flex fan. Not good pullers.
