FJ40 Transfer Shift Lever

I want to thank everyone for their responses and feedback. My determination was getting the best of me. I figured if the transfer case shifter and shift guide worked prior to the teardown it should work after the rebuild. I wanted the transfer case shifter to play nice with the shift guide but it does not appear that is going to happen. The transfer case shifter appears to function properly without the guide in place so that is how it will remain for now. I might revisit the issue once I get the cruiser running to see if there is a cause for the change or simply modify the guide so the shift lever clears the guide.

Again thanks for the guidance!!!!

I've been running mine without the shift guide for over 20 years with no issues. You also get the option of using 2wd low gear this way but I haven't really found much use for it. Make sure your passenger seat people know not to bump the lever though. My son accidently kicked us into neutral once while out wheeling. :(

Thanks for this post, I was having a similar problem with my 79 and was able to get my shift lever working much better by lubricating the shift linkage with a good soaking of penetrating oil over a couple of days and also lubricating the zerk fitting on the shift linkage under the chassis. I was still having a small amount of clearance issues but was happy with the improvement. I recently replaced the motor mounts and found that lo and behold the linkage clears the plate. I don’t understand why this made a difference but just wanted to pass along my gratitude for the post.

Ah, the ol’ “bad engine mounts cause other interference issues with drive train” issue. Mark @65swb45 clued me into this a bunch of years ago. Thumbs up for checking this and rectifying!

The bent bolt and broken front mount was on the passenger side.

Anyone ever come up with a cause for the TC guide plate interfering with shifting after a rebuild?
Earlier in this thread, @65swb45 stated he often just leaves the guide plate off. Looks like while I’ll have to do.
Shifts and engages as it should, just hits the guide plate.
