So I’ve got an h42 trans with the manual t-case, but when it’s in any gear,( 2,4h,4L )doesn’t matter, and I’m coasting in any gear (1,2,3,4 ) the t-case will pop out and go into neutral but as soon as I come to a stop or a slow roll I can put the t-case back into gear so down hills I have to either clutch in or put the trans in neutral so the t-case doesn’t pop into neutral, is there any way I can fix that? Rebuild or something, it works completely fine just can’t coast

Check the detent ball, spring and shaft for the hi-lo shift fork.

If your T case is anything like my fj40 there is a small lock plate on the rear side of the case. Before you start tearing things apart see it it is still there holding the hi low shaft in place.

Time for a rebuild. Worn shift fork, along with the hi-Lo shift collar, and probably the main output shaft.

Okay, just gonna replace the entire thing, got a donor trans from a bj40, is there any difference in the h42 trans other then the trans input shaft spline count?

We seem to be having a language issue here. We WERE talking about a TRANSFER CASE problem here, not a TRANSMISSION.

I have another complete trans and t-case but it’s from a diesel and I need one from a gas, as the clutch splines are different, but the t-cases look the same, would I be able to swap t-cases with no problem or is there anything I’d need to do to make it work.

You should be able to swap. More importantly I recommend a swap because...it is more responsible to swap, so you can inspect what you’re installing.

Get a manual (or copy one from here) some new seals and gaskets. If you want to wait until you disassemble the t case you’re planning to swap in, you might find a bearings-included overhaul kit is a better purchase.
