Has anyone put a Rooftop Tent on a FJ40?

If so, how did it work?

I have seen them on 80's and 60's but sofar not a FJ40.

Yes, I've seen it done. Look in the expedition section under the rtt thread. Oh, and by the way, I have one for sale:)

In 78 when I bought my 40, there was an aftermarket top that replaced the cap. It had expandable sides and raised about 24 inches. Slept two, zippered entry at the rear.

Anyone have any further info on this?

Westfallia (spelling wrong) same company that converted VW buses into campers (german) may have made these, I believe someone had a pic or two a one in Germany last month. It should be under BJ-40's or 43's maybe.

Here is mine, it is a LONG way down on 35's with 4" of lift.

The only downside is entering and exiting the tent. It is a little precarious... I was really surprised how little movement I had once I was up there, it is very stable. I have plans to install a rope/strap to the far end of the tent to hoist myself up and give something to hold onto on the way out.

The ladder is crap on my RTT... but plans are to move it to a trailer when I am done building it.

Man, it has been a cooler than normal summer here in Colorado ;) :D

Here are a few more: One from my second story window, one of how I lock the RTT to the rack.

Dang man, you better put a red flashing light on top so a FEDEX plane don't fly into your tent.

No joke! It sits really high. Not too high to use, but it pushes the limit. My long term plan is a trailer mounted design.

I like the diecast FJ40. Perhaps I can find out who made it, and where I can get one - or a few dozen?

Check this link - lots of pictures of LCs with tents - 40, 45, 60, 70, trucks...
