75 FJ40 Restoration (kind of)

Last night, I finally finished the breakdown of my 75 FJ40 for a frame off restoration. I thought I might celebrate with a few pics. Next step is to sandblast the frame vs acid dip with galvanization.

How long from start to finish did the overall tear down take you?

It was accomplished in bursts of activity and then long periods of downtime while I fixed everything else that seems to break on my place and keep me from working on the 40. From start to finish it was about 3 years, but in actual worktime, it was about a week. Might have been able to take it apart faster, but I was anal about taking pictures so I might have a blueprint for assembly.

As far as what I plan to do to it, that is still up in the air somewhat. I am learning more and more from this forum so I change my mind quite a bit. I already have a new 4 inch BDS lift ready for it, and am planning on 35 inch tires. Power steering is in the plans. The engine was strong when I removed it, but it will probably end up rebuilt so that I can be sure that it is as dependable as it can be. I am still trying to decide if I want to branch into the body work for rust repair, or if I might try an aluminum tub. I do not think the rust is that bad, but I am afraid of what I might find upon blasting the body. I am a self taught welder, and fairly good, but I am by no means a professional.

FWIW my 40 has a galvanised chassis. It takes any worry about rust completely out of the picture and I would think that it has got to hold up better than any sort of paint. I love it because most of my offroading is beach work - lots of salt. When the truck came to me all the running gear, motor, drivetrain and basically anything that could have rust on it did. Only surface stuff but you could tell the truck had seen lots of salt. Even the bolts holding the fibreglass panels were rusted solid and breakage/disintergration was the norm when I replaced them. The exception was the chassis. The galvanising has kept it totally protected and very clean.

As for the preparation, acid dip and galvanising it was done by a PO - bless his meticulous heart! I am one bloke on this board that has only good things to say about my PO, lol. I'm not sure what the preparation steps are that are involved and how it stacks up price wise etc v's sandblasting and painting but I would highly recommend it.

Good luck with the rig:cheers:

Want to make sure I have this right. You galvanized your body or just the frame? Never heard of anyone galvanizing the body but that would be cool if you could paint over it.

Ahhhh, now I see why it took you 3 years to get it to this point. I find myself following the kids around and fixing what they just played with as well.

Looking forward to watching your build.

off topic real quick, but did ummm... anyone happen to notice the huge VIAGRA poster in the background of that photo? :) what's up with that? are you a supporter or just a rep???

I'm a doctor so I guess in a way I support peoples habit for the medication.

As far as the sign, I got it off a dead drug rep ;) Thought it might be funny in the shop.

My frame has been galvanized, but has not arrived yet. Pics soon.

I finally got around to sandblasting the axles. Here are some pics of my wife helping me out. She kicks ass!

Next step is to put Rust Encapsulator on the axles and then paint them.
