I have a 75 fj40 lhd, I’m going to add power steering. After much research I think a mini truck box or fj40 box will work for me, I’m not going bigger than 33” tires. Anyway I found this on amazon - any thoughts? Not sure if this is an aftermarket “factory lc” part or something else. Haven’t found any mini truck boxes locally, but I haven’t looked very hard either. Thanks!

Regardless of how much it is (or isn't), the last thing I'd trust my safety to is a No Name brand knock off from Amazon.
Quality vendors (City Racer for instance) sell quality products that many have tested throughout the years.

Please invest in quality parts.
Save up if you have to. Buying crap will, at best, make you spend more in the long run and at the worst, injure someone.

Your point is well taken - city racer is a good vender and has many thousands of my dollars -but china does produce plenty of good reliable products, and they are getting better. I’m pretty sure that most of Toyotas steering boxes are manufactured in china and have been for ages. There is plenty of crap that floods Amazon, but a lot of these products come out of the same molds as oem products using the same steel, in the same factory, assembled by the same workers. This may not be one of these products, but it’s worth an ask.

New OEM steering gear boxes for the Land Cruiser series of vehicles are most definitely not manufactured in China.

I have had trucks come through the shop with that box installed. Some work fine some feel awful.
They literally have the mounting pedestal welded to the main box section (they use the hydraulics and work/sector internals from something else) and then the welds ground down and painted over.
I would rather see you get a OEM mini truck box and the bracket from @orangefj45

I might put a knockoff mirror on my truck, but never safety related items.

Strange configuration, it appears the mounting flange is perpendicular to the direction the steering shaft is oriented....doesn't this mean it needs to mount to the inside of the front cross member(????) I don't think that is a vertical surface....all kinds of WTF going on here.

Excellent, thanks, this is the information I was looking for. I’ll likely go with the mini truck box, but it’s nice to know it’s out there and in use, and that it is of variable quality.

I’d VERY VERY HIGHLY recommend finding a good used Minitruck or 40 series box and getting it rebuilt by a reputable Rebuilder like a redhead.
We have seen nothing but issues with a Chinese aftermarket steering boxes and would absolutely refuse to install them. They’re terrible quality …….

Maybe not, but Toyota lists a large number of manufacturing affiliates in china and the parts/cars they make on their global website. These include years going back decades, and multiple Land Cruiser series/parts are listed. These may or may not have been exclusively for Chinese markets, but they are Toyota parts. The supply chain is messier than most people realize and Chinese parts are in everything and have been for decades.

There is a HUGE DIFFERENCE between parts manufactured strictly for Toyota ( using their own tooling, specifications, and metallurgic requirement ) no matter where in the world they’re manufactured, and some “over the counter” Chinese ( or anywhere else ) product that is made with recycled scrap from here or somewhere else on the continent.

Apples and oranges.

This is true, but not all aftermarket parts are made from recycled scrap, just most of them.

Yeah, this one got a little off track. It’s clear that oem parts are superior, not even a discussion to have, just a given. Some aftermarket parts are good enough to get the job done safely, and others aren’t, just wondering if this was one of them. Seems like it is not. Thanks for those who responded, this was very helpful. If any one in the Philadelphia metro area has a mini truck box they are willing to part with, please let me know. If anyone wants this box, I can order it and pass it along - unless just the nut comes!

You can put a wanted ad in the classified section. You can also put can ad in your respective clubhouse sections that are close to you.
