Media FJ40 Pics from "Back in the day" (70's, 80's)

Found a better picture of my brother's 68. Still cannot find pics of my 1970 one. Love the white pin stripping. I might to that on the 80 I am starting to restore. My 70 was black with similar pin stripping.

My 71 has the same stripes. I thought it was a one off thing, but it's not.

I've posted these on the 45 section, but I thought they would fit in well here. This is me in Rock Springs, Wy when I was about 4 or so. That is our 1972 FJ40 which we bought new, and which is still in the family.

A few shots of the same 1972 FJ40 taken in the San Juan mountains of Colorado in about 1975. Tom: are those photos from Perth and SA from that trip you took around Oz with your rig which you have now?

Yes Josh. We bought the BJ40 in Perth and eventually flew it from Sydney to Auckland (which turned out to be a better option than shipping at that time).

And those old photos of yours put mine to shame! ..... Fantastic!

I'm sorry for the crap cellphone quality but I don't have a scanner. My dad's '69 FJ40 that he put a 454 BBC into, only picture taken of it while in his posession that I know of circa mid 80s. He welded a panel where the vent for the old heater blower on the side was and moved the fenders to accomodate the headers after this was taken, this was right after he did the initial install. Had a 9" rear with discs and a drum front end since he hadnt gotten around to changing the front brakes. An SM465/NP205 combo was used I believe. I remember playing around in it when I was little, shifting and moving the steering wheel. He sold it when I was 5 because the new house we were at had neighbors that did not appreciate the open header big block. If anyone knows what happened to this thing I'd like to know, it started my love affair with FJ40s. Seller's name was Randy, sold it in Colorado, I believe it was still that brown color.

As you can tell from the photos- my Dad was not too precious about the Toad The fact that the Toad is still alive is a testament to Land Cruisers, not to my Dad's being precious. It is nice of you to say that about the photos Tom, but it simply isn't true.

Here are a few more: which only look a bit better than yours, Tom, because I was fortunate enough for my Dad to have used Kodachrome. More importantly though, my Cruiser has never been flown anywhere; THAT takes the cool-cake

First is my Mother and I on Engineer's Pass in about 1974, second is in the Tetons in Wyoming, third is up above Ward, where we lived and fouth is on Pearl Street in Boulder before they made it a foot mall.

Well I might as well dump the last of my seventies photos on here too (unless I find some more).

I think there is at least one cruiser in each of them to justify their presence on this forum

In a couple I've pointed out the old series 2A diesel landrover that I used to own back then.

(Yes - I'm indeed a "converted Landrover enthusiast". But being a Landrover enthusiast ended as soon as I saw my first FJ40! And then when the diesel cruisers started to come out..........Well....At that stage Landrover ownership started to become shameful )

The first two are the Rimutaka Incline and the last here I think is Foxton Beach.

And if I'm not mistaken, that brown 4x4 in the last photo is an Austin Gipsy. If I remember correctly the drive train is full of universal joints (to cope with independant suspension all-round. (There's a dark green one at the front in the Ahipara photo too.) ..............I remember them to be very unreliable because of that "sophisticated" suspension system but I'd expect these vehicles to be quite "collectible" now if they've survived.

I swear, that green one towing the other truck is the exact same color as my rig - is that a standard Toyota color? Never would've thought....
