well got 72 fj40 i have a set of 96 fj80 e locker axle's, the back is spring over , the front is going to be a three link on oder is some balstic 16" coil over's and some joints, i am thinking 2.0 od 1.5 id dom tubing well looking for some hints or pic's to this swap thanks :steer:

:bang: also have qu about links can the third top link be shorter then the bottom how much vertical sepration at axle and frame is good

The upper link can be shorter. About 75% of the lower lenghts tends to yeild good results. However these lenghts and vertical separation, etc all depend on the other factors of your suspension. Go to Pirate and download the 3-link calculator. There are links on my build "help with a 3 link on a '99 4Runner" that some others have posted. I think the link calculator link is on there as well. I am doing a 3 link front and 4 link rear on mine and have found you'll have to settle a little on the numbers game. It will come down to what room you have to work with. As far as link material I am also using 2" x .250 wall DOM for my links. Some have said it is too light while others have had good luck. I am still considering sleeving my lowers with 1.5" x .250 DOM to beef them up a little. The ney-sayers will be there regardless what you do. There is another link on my build where a guy 3 linked an 80 axle but it was on his 80, not a 40 but still may be a good reference. Do a lot of research, you'll love the results. Measure twice, cut once.

thanks guys for the input i could not find a link calulator that would open on computer so i will keep looking also jheep ur thread would not open so hoping it will start working soon looks good thanks

well guess nobody can help me with this swap thanks anyway:crybaby:

nice cruiser thanks for the input your fourm gave me some good ideas what what lenth coilovers in front did u use

14 foxes on all corners

spring rates will be an issue as well

make sure your shock vendor allows you to swap out springs

nice cruiser thanks for the input your fourm gave me some good ideas what what lenth coilovers in front did u use

what spring rate did u use i have s6 u have v8 i think i ordered 300 over 250 thanks guys:cheers:

Been working on a simple plan for a front linkage for my cruiser. I like the three link, I really just need to do more research. I love the way my rear 4-link travels. My pinion angle doesn't change much, just enough to do it right. I think it would be ideal in the front, as the steering geometry wouldn't change much as it travels. My links are around 39" but that damn oil pan is in the way, so it wont fit! Has anyone ever tried bent upper links as if they were "bow legged". You know, in order to go around the oil pan but still remain triangulated?

I'm working on redesigning the same overall design as my rear 4-link to fit up front. If I could make the links a few inches shorter it would fit better, say 30"- 33". I was thinking if I don't change the geometry of the suspension linkage, keeping the same intersection points of the angles. Just move where the axle would be orientated in the lines, does that make sense??
If I kept the frame mounts the same horizontally and vertically, then move the axle forward. To keep the same geometry I'd increase the horizontal separation between the upper axle mounts, and narrow the horizontal gap on the lower axle mounts. The vertical separation at the axle would also decrease at the axle as it is closer to the frame mounts. All the angles of the linkage wouldn't change, just the axle mounts and the actual length of the links.

Am I wrong here, or just not making sense? It seems to me, by doing this, the axle would travel close to the same way as it does in the rear. The shorter links would give less travel, and a tighter radius as it travels. No matter what a triangulated 4-link is best in my mind, but a lot more complicated. Sorry if I'm hijacking

well got all the brackets and tubing thr rear steer on the axle sucks for a three link:confused:

the 4x4 labs are for fj40 or mini truck axle i have fj80

That's right. One of the reasons I put the elocker rear in a 55 housing. Also better drive shaft angles, easier to get on my trailer and stronger axles and birfs (with the Super Longfields)

Easy enough to just go with a wristed radius with a panhard then.
