So i am about to sell my 1990 Fj62 who is currently my DD and buy a 73' with a 350, 4sp and sitting on 35's that will be my new DD. I only commute 13 miles round trip each day....is this an ok move?

Should be fine, no AC but you can take the top off, I drive my FJ40 that far every day, no sweat, but I really like FJ40's, Larry

Well i have always wanted to have a DD 40. I have been driving 60's for the last 5 years but never a 40. This will also be my very 1st 40 so i am very excited about that. What is the gearing on a 73'?

4.11:1

Its also has a 2 speed overdrive as well so that will help on the highway.

Go for it, I have been driving my 74 40 as a DD for the last two weeks. I drive at least 30 miles a day @11-12 mpg w/ 87 octane with an average speed of about 55mph on the twisty back roads I take to and from work every day. My other car is a 02 Subaru WRX, it gets 22mpg w/93 octane fuel @3.85/gal so I figure I am almost even in fuel expense. It took me 6 years to get another 40 and I am loving every rattle shake and vibration she throws at me, I finely have a car I can work on again.

later,

Corey

I drive my 40 about 22 miles round trip to work daily. The price of fuel must be a non-issue for you though. Enjoy the 40!!!

Larry lives in Montana. Read: coolness and mountains. You live in Dallas: read: heat, heat, more heat, humidity, and heat. You're outta your freakin mind. Additionally, if you think mileage in your 62 is bad, a 350 on 35's oughta bring a good 25 per cent mileage drop, minimum. It's cool to be cool, and you ain't gonna be cool. I love 40's as much as anybody, but everyone I've had, I've installed a/c for the Texas summers. From a practical standpoint, it's lose/lose. It'd be a lotta fun tho, for a while.

Ditto - I would drive mine to work 2-3 days a week last summer. My commute is about 5 miles each way and I often have to work in a suit, sometimes just dress shirt and slacks. Mornings weren't too bad, bud leaving downtwon in the afternoons was brutal. I had the top off, but the urban heat still just soaked me. Cool yes, comfortable no.

well in my line of work i get to wear shorts ,flip flops and t-shirts to work so the heat isn't much of a factor.

BigSur,

I'am in austin, and I've been driving my FJ40 as a DD for about two weeks. It fun and Iam enjoying it, but - Iam already looking into a A/C unit for the Texas heat!! Iam not saving much gas buy driving the FJ40 over my Fj62, or the FZJ80, but it sure is fun! ;)

Hey mark let me know what you find out about an a/c unit for your 40.

Jason
