You'd get this in front of the right audience by posting in the FJ25 Classifieds. LMK if you'd like me to move this thread.

Moved this over from general classifieds, left a one hour redirect over there.

Folks,

I recently bought a '63FJ40 and I will be having the driver's seat reupholstered. From my research, I believe the vinyl should be attached to a perforated steel panel. Both front seats are missing this panel. Before I proceed with the project, I would like to be sure I am advising the upholsterer correctly. Any guidance or photos showing the proper configuration (for either/or both front seats) would be very helpful. Rod W. West Charlton, NY

Your '63 likely has a different style seat than used in the FJ25's and 1961-1962 FJ40's. I believe your style was used from 1963-1970. It's been a while since I've recovered one of those seats but I believe you're right about the lower seat pan being perforated.

Thanks! I guess I will have to make a decision regarding originality of what I do, or do not have. I just received a link to a 1971 FJ somewhere in the (non-English speaking world) that suggests the panels were a later addition. Such is the quest for authenticity.

Send a pic of what you have. 1963 was a transition year which resulted in some mid-production changes.

Thanks!! I will attach a few photos of the seat project and a few more of the overall vehicle. Where are you in NH? I believe I have heard of a well informed shop in NH. I am also familiar with Greg's Restoration in central MA.

All of the misc. lights and reflectors have been removed. The fender extensions on the front have been removed. the rear corner windows have been removed. Rear floor bed has been striped and is in process of being cleaned, sanded, and dents filled. Any advice is welcomed.

Please start a thread in the FJ25 section. Would love to see how it looks like. and read about your progress. Good you removed all the Christmas tree lights.

You have a 61 BTW. Your VIN starts with 1. If the data plate says 63 it means it was sold in 1963. It is produced in 1961. You have the 227th produced FJ40. A real early one.

(Your VIN is 1-FJ40-10227 right?)

Right. You wrote 1 number higher then ldcr63’s. Now I see he has two. My bad.
...I only wish they would get in touch with me. Hasen't been heard from for several years!! I started a "conversation" with them in hopes that they might respond. Pretty rare to find the car with the next lower VIN from mine I suspect.

How were those fender extenders attached ?

...welded on I believe!! Not happy with that but the blend is seamless!! Not sure where the original fender transitions to the added metal!!!!! May even leave the added metal there and just deal with the front edge!!
