i kinda forgot to pm ya back dean...sorry about that :frown:

anyway...yeah the landies have a place in my heart...i used to work on them alot for a company called brittania years ago...we loved them....they would always come back for more :D

mechanically great....leaked worse than a cruiser...ALOT worse...and the electriacl was horrable...ground issue after ground issue...not just on the landies but all british leyalnd products at that time...jags, mg's, triumphs, austin h's ...most every type of british car...i do like them alot
 
heres a pic of my triumph that i drive as my dd for many years...it was my 1st car...that had a great supedup lil engine...

just sold it 2 years ago?

loved the looks i got with that car...also loved to set off car alarms with the exhaust....Mmmmm Monza :D

So was the grounding really the biggest issue ? ...well that and the puddles...

Was there a fix for either, i.e. better gaskets, running a green ground line through out the truck...etc? What was the corrosion like on these old girls?

I think most of us older Cruiser lovers like Johnny, Destin, and myself have a thing for the older Landies...how about the rest of you? To have means, I'd love to eventually restore a perfect trio of old 4x4s...the Cruiser, an old 50's 86" Series 1, and 40's Ford or Willys jeep...I started with the Cruiser, as this is what I yearned for the most :)

Edit: BTW Johnny, what a neat Triumph...would have been pretty hard top get extra cars seats in that one :lol:

:D Sorry Johnny, the only thing I loved about this car was the color I painted it, and the relatively easy mail order parts availability...........that and my excess hair should give you an idea how old the picture is. :p

Dean yes it was fixable....ALOT of ultracopper on both sides of the gasket :meh:

the grounds ...we would replace nthe ground ends they had on the harness with better ends...the owner had a good supply from someplace.
 
Me I don't care for the old Landies at all. But I do know of a 1964 108 that old lady who owns it won't sell it to me or anyone else. To0 many memories from earlier years. The poor thing hasn't run for years. If it was a pickup like the picture above I would probably pressure her a little more.

That does look like an old picture Jim. I probably had hair then.:frown:

Don`t know if you guys have seen this Land Rover version before,
it`s the Land Rover Lightweight (1968-1985) produced only for the english army, based on the civilian Land Rover mechanic.
Although named Lightweight, it was actually heavier than its civilian counterpart.

dumb question I'm sure but how are you supposed to turn over an early F engine by hand if you have a PTO winch in the way of the crankshaft hole in the crossmember?

Pull the plugs and bump the starter? Use the flywheel somehow?

Trying to check/adjust the valves. Maybe we can do it at FG Jim?

i grab onto the crank pully and vbelt and turn...sometimes i put a wrench on the alternator nut also :meh:
 
Like Johnny said, turn it with the fan and belt. Your hand crank is now obsolete. :p

JC, mine was more of a blonde 'fro, when it started getting all Greatest American Hero like I started with the crew cut. :lol:
 
If I was in the middle of nowhere and the battery was dead I do believe I would pull the winch and use the handle. I'm a old man and I can still pull one of these winchs by myself. In a pinch could probably do it with the factory tools but the tools I nornally carry would work better.
 
I would agree with the crank pulley/fan blade method for finding TDC etc..

as far as being stranded with a dead battery, the vehicle is +/- 50 yrs old, subscribe to AAA:p
