I would agree with the crank pulley/fan blade method for finding TDC etc..

as far as being stranded with a dead battery, the vehicle is +/- 50 yrs old, subscribe to AAA

AAA is fine if your on pavement. I have camped in a old cruiser miles from the nearest roads. Plus it kinda hard to call AAA with no cell phone service. I alway tried to limit my vehicle's radio/tape use at night sitting around the camp fire so it would start the next morning for the early hunt

i didnt want a pto so i could use my hand crank...sooo...i got my pierce winch mounted up....now i can bore a hole thru the bottom of the winch plate and still use my hand crank....however...i never did bore that hole

so i figured out rotating it by hand isnt all that bad...but...a hand crank is much easier...

i should really get to making a hole for that thing

a friend is getting a plasma cutter...that would make it much easier

Sounds like a good idea Johnny. I can lift a PTO winch off but there is no way I would try to lift that Pierce by myself. There would be no way I could walk out if I'm pinned under a monster winch with a broken back


Sean nowdays there is a better chance I will be wrenching in the garage. The day after I bought my 68 back in 1974 I drove thirty miles in on forest service roads. Then decided to drive over logs laying down in a old burn only to get high centered. Besides finding out there is a right way and wrong way to drive over logs I found a 12" Diamond Horseshoe adjustable wrench sitting on top of the skid plate from the PO. I remember pulling the transmission and transfer case in Nov 74 when the clutch locked up. Did that outside. Only problem was the PO hadn't folded ever the locking tags on the flywheel bolts. One had loosened up enough to lock the disc up I say nowdays not because I won't go off like that again but because I know have a garage to work in.

most work i do is outside...i hate working in fumes...its easyer to do cleanup also...

funny about that flywheel bolt John...i had a simular thing happen to me...clutch locked right up and couldnt shift it at all....grind grind...

cranked over fine and started right up...turned out my starter had the end break off and was wedged between the plate...of couse i didnt find that out untill i sweared and cursed the tranny a thousand times ...dropped the flywheen pan...and out fell some pieces

Sorry Johnny I'll take a garage. 4,500 CFM cooler to blow fumes away. Epoxy painted floor for easy cleane-up. Then not having to pickup tools everyday or deal with tarps for rain. Plus it keeps the neighbors happy. My old neighborhood everytime I parked a unlicensed vehicle next to my garage I would get a letter from the city. Plus I just think I getting soft. Still don't think I would want to pull a transmission transfer case in Flagstaff, AZ in Nov. again.

Sean, FG is 10/1-3. Stop by in November if you're around. Other than a top, I'm almost ready, rusty hubcaps and a winch I don't want to scratch the paint on.

My short FG list:
Install FJ40 roll bar
Install t-case output seal and top off with fluid
Install tach on column (clamp on, no holes)
Re-wire GPS, 12V outlets and stereo off the battery, not the fuse block
Seat covers are at the foam shop, should get em back Thursday, then its upholstery time!.

Jim, it looks like my passenger seat will be ready so I'll have an open seat.

i even decided to put on Warn hubs. Wow, it drives nice without the front axle turning!!

I had to quote that before you had a chance to shift up from third or change the cylinder setting on the tach. ;p

ya, I cant seem to find a cylinder setting on it and theres nothing in the directions on how to change it. I thought it was wrong.

Seat foam should be ready today, WOOHOO!!

Got the tach set up right now.

55mph = 2750rpm
60mph = 3000rpm

I made it to Johnston on the highway and back to pick up my seat foam. I still have a trans/xfer leak. I could smell gear oil on the hot exhaust on the highway and it was dripping when I stopped and parked it.

I took the 25 to Newport today to work on fogblankets FJ45LV. I solved his poorly running 2F issues and almost got the trailer wiring working. I drove back topless and windshield down. Its gotta be in the top 5 scaries experiences I've had crossing the Newport bridge with a stiff crosswind. But I made it home. With the newused axle in, the ride at 55 is much quieter.

I luckily did not partake in the windshield down bridge crossing. I was a bit nervous just doing 60mph in Fox's 25 down a regular road. I did not need to be in it at 200 feet above the water getting blasted. that said boy that 25 is sharp really nice Mike it has come along way and thanks for installing the turbo in the lv

You install it and I'll wire it when we get there, no worries, it won't rain. I'll be looking for something to do, because the 25 pulling a uhaul will be such a confidence builder.

And you should try crossing that bridge with a crosswind and a LV five feet off your butt.
