Hi Chicago, Nicely done!
I am looking at front shock mounting options. You have one picture of the Ford towers. It looks like you had to cut some of the fender out, or is that something else? Why are the Ford towers the ones to have? It sounds like they were PITA? How much taller are they?
Did you order your rear shock mounts direct from the maker?
Thanks for the thread!
They were a PITA, but they werent....
The only thing that made them difficult was the DS next to the steering box! Its REALLY FRICKING TIGHT there and made it EXTREMELY difficult to weld. It wouldnt have been an issue except I wanted the shocks mounted above the center of the housing...I could have moved them to the back side of the housing and given myself some more space, but I just thought it best to have it centered as much as possible.
SO, with a compromise, it would have been much easier...I didnt want to compromise the center location, so it made it more challenging.
YES, you will have to cut out the fender well, which is pretty easy.
I drilled and tapped the frame to bolt up the tower after I had my position set. Made the welding much easier too.
Like Cruiserdrew said...the ford towers are CHEAP and really simple to mount and you get a TON of length out of em. I looked at the hoops too, but looking at how they had to mount, it would have made welding even more difficult as the struts on the hoops get welded to the TOP of the frame rail.
I got my shock tabs from Kurt at cruiser outfitters. I ran the front tabs like the FJ40...One tab with a through bolt, 1/2 in, grade 8.
If you want pics, lemme know and Ill get some for ya.
The rear lower pins I got from Sky mfg...they are an AWESOME design. A bit pricy IMO (35.00 for 2), but to me, WORTH EVERY PENNY!
Rusty TLC and I are gonna make a short run today and see how everythings working on the trail! Ill post pics of that later.
