If anyone knows the answer I figure it will be someone in this section.

Am I crazy to try and build a FJ 55 into a tow rig?

My real question is will the frame hold up to the weight and is the wheel base too short to tow well?

My evil plan is to box the rear frame rails, possibly add a new crossmember, and weld a receiver hitch in for the tow duties.

The drivetrain would probably be a 6BT combo out of a Dodge running a 14bolt rear and a 60 front for axles.

How much wieght do you want to tow?

The real question ..

So to toy really long distances a 40 .. ? armored .. you must need to considere the brake capabilities in your 55 .. and maybe ( just IMOP ) trailer with brakes ..

Will the 55 weigh more than the towed rig?

Tails should not wag their dogs...

That being said, I am going to do limited towing with my FJ60. Just nothing that big..

Oh well, guess I will go back to waiting for Toyota to come out with a diesel powered truck and keep on driving to the trails. damn.

or get a 80 series .. 105 series . ? :D

John,

I hear the new Tundra is going to a Diesel, we'll have to see if it's a rumor or not.

Once you tow with a fullsize 3/4 or more, you'll never want to go back. Even then, a cruiser can be a bitch. When I was young and foolish, Wes Worek and I tried towing his 40 to GSMTR with my Cummin's powered Dodge and because the trailer was fawked up it started fishtailing and almost killed us. Moral of the story, you need a good trailer too, not some piece of crap.

Check out how big Dana 60/70 brakes are, you'll be shocked compared to the Cruiser parts.

Look for a good used Dodge that some old man used as a car.

You can tow with a short wheelbase vehicle. The trick is it needs to have a lot of weight. And that's pretty hard to do with most non-commerical or non-military vehicles. And they tend to ride miserably and aren't as forgiving of driver error or bad road surfaces (slickness, etc.) as a longer wheelbase vehicle.

"Could" an FJ55 be used? If it was me, and I was bound and determined to make it work, damn the topedos, I'd be putting in heavy duty axles from a full sized pickup, along with heavy duty running gear and a suitable engine. And then figuring out how to add as much weight (ballast) as possible with things like a heavy full roll cage, massive bumpers, beef up the frame, etc. By the time you've done, you're almost better off dropping a body on a home made or altered chassis.

The point is, I don't think you're going to do it well or for long with a stock FJ55. I wasn't even happy with my FJ40 pulling around my empty trailer made from the ass end of a full sized pickup. You could tell that the stock tranny really needed a lower 1st gear ratio with that weight. And my axle ratio is 4.10. Is yours 4.10 or 3.70?

Further, have you added up the weight of an FJ40 plus the trailer weight? Even with trailer brakes that's asking a lot of FJ55 brakes. Not only are you not going to have much "go", but not much "whoa" either.

And loaded tongue weight should be 10% to 15% of the loaded trailer weight. For argument's sake let's say the trailer and FJ40 weigh 6000 lbs (I can't find the empty weight of an FJ40 and my estimate is probably low). That means a tongue weight of 600 to 900 lbs. That's almost a half ton on your FJ55 hitch right there. You need a pretty herky suspension in the back to remain level, plus some ballast to keep some weight down on the front wheels for steering traction, since the hitch puts the load leverage way back to the rear of the natural pivot point, the rear axle. Your FJ55 frame and hitch better be up to the task back there at the hitch points as well as the spring perch and shackle points. And then there's the rear axle... I think you can see why I mentioned dropping the body on a custom frame. No doubt it would be the coolest tow rig, but do you want to go there?

Do it!
- Buy a 55 and the sling some heavy axles under it (Dynatrac pro 80 front and rear)
- Stretch the wheelbase 7" up front and 7-8" in the rear
- Link the front and rear and add airbags to the rear
- Drop in a Cummins 4bta, 6bt or 4 cylinder Isuzu diesel.
- Add huge rear tank SOR has a 50 gallon long range
- Beef the frame
- Your Done
- Hook up your 40 and tow away

Your 55 would have the same wheelbase as a Tundra, weigh a lot more, have better power and better brakes.

One more thing. I know several people that tow with their FZJ80's they are only slightly longer and heavier then an FJ55. I know that Ironpigoffroad tows FJ40's, FJ55's and FJ60's with his 80. I would love to see this project. If I could ever finish my damn 55 project, I would love to try this with a FJ45lv.

A 55 with a 6BT would be awesome! But is it worth the expense, or would it be way less money to just convert an FJ80 to a 6BT? But the uniqueness of a 55 with a 6BT would be very cool. Has anyone done this before?

I have never heard of anyone putting a 6bt into a 55, 4bt yes, but not 6bt.

As cool of an idea as stretching a 55 would be I could not bring myself to do it to the subject 55 I have in mind for this project. Perhaps one day Toyota will build the truck I am sure many of us want.
