Are the second gen 4Runner brakes much better then the first gen 4Runner brakes? I just replaced the MC, both wheel cylinders and shoes, bleed the system on my 86 4Runner and still have a mushy peddle. I just drove my buddies 95 4Runner and the brakes are amazing compared to mine. I bleed the system in the correct manner, RR LR RF LF and then the LSPCV. Suggestions?!?!?!?

Yeah I was thinking of hoses, perhaps they are bulging under pressure. Any suggestions on where to get SS hoses that are standard length, most I've seen are for lifted trucks.

My '85 pickup has good, firm brakes. If they're mushy, it isn't a design issue.

How are you bleeding them? As mentioned, the MC can be tricky. But I typically use either a pressure bleeder or the two-man method to get the best results.
 
my 84 rear brakes, never worked, the adjusters were frozen. but the difference between the 84, 85 and 86 to 89 rear brakes is huge, one of the best thing i did was put that 86 rear under it.

the other thing is to make sure the rear lpv is operational, you will get better results when bleeding if you load the rear down or unbolt the arm and raise it up.

This was one of my ideas, I am replacing all the flex lines this weekend and retrying. I've tried the pressure bleeding method but could hardly put any pressure on the system or the cap would pop off, perhaps the strainer should be removed from the master cylinder, any ideas?

i am pretty sure you need to keep your cap off, the only preasure system i have any experience with was in a shop and hooked up to the master and bleeders, it would clean all the old fluid out. i usually use a combo of 2 person and a vacuum bleeder.

The pressure bleeder cap or the reservoir cap?

You don't need a lot of pressure. If you're blowing the pressure bleeder cap off, you're likely putting entirely too much pressure into it.
 
I replaced all the flex lines and bleed the system, the truck stops, peddle is still not that good. To recap what I've replaced...new Aisin master and wheel cylinders, new flex lines, new rear shoes. I've adjusted the shoes, the front pads are almost new, and I've bleed the system per the FSM until I got clean bubble free fluid coming out of the bleeders. I'm about to go down the road of replacing the LCPV, perhaps that thing is internally failing. NO I am not going to remove the LCPV and install a after market adjustable one, I like how this thing is designed to work, if I have to pay $$$$ for something that will last another 20+ years then so be it. Any suggestions?????? Oh and I reprimed (bench bleed) the master cylinder, I got a couple of bubbles out of that so I know that the MC is air free.

Back to the original question. My 85 has the stock brakes in the rear. In the front I'm running the larger "V6" calipers with Land Cruiser vented disks. This is pushed by a 1" master from the same truck the calipers came from.

Love my brakes.
 
i hae an 87 runner, and my brakes worked just enough to keep me stopping, than i read on here about upgrading to the v6 calipers with a bigger 1" master, and now i can stop alot nicer, and my pedal feel was greatly improved!! in my opinion, you should check into doing the upgrade, well worth it!!
