1st, mechanical, servicing etc, then soft top, and while it does look cool the rust is doing damage and needs to be addressed. I shipped my new 40 home and 1 week later it was in the body shop getting a tub off refurbish that took many months.
The patina crowd will general apply several coats of carnuba in lieu of clear coat. Cheap and can be done over several periods as opposed to wearing your arms out all at once.
Don't paint it! Lose the rear bumper ..
