Sweet thread. Thought I would add in my firewood story and pics. We heat our place with wood unless we are gone for more than a day and the Propane takes over. I'very heated with wood most of my life and love the entire experience of gathering it to burning it, it also helps that our winters are long and heating bills can get high. We purchased our property a couple years ago and the first thing I did was put in a wood stove. We gather aspen and pine here that I cut with my stihl and haul with my fj60 in my ford pickup bed trailer. Sometimes the 40 gets to come play if I need the winch. I've included some shots I had of our stash and gear. We spend all our money on land cruisers so we built a dual purpose fence on a budget out of logs as you can see in the photos. Keeps the animals in, neighbors out and is a few winters worth of backup fuel if we need it! We also can't dig there because of utility lines so this worked out nicely as it sits on top of the ground and is back filled. I wouldn't mind some nice hardwood that I see a lot of you getting!

Helped a long time friend of mine cut up his oak tree. He was happy when I let him use one of my bigger saws.

Log is about 9' long.

The oak slabs are cut 14/4 (3 1/2")
All 3 slabs came out perfect

This was a monster oak.
A limb fell off.
I brushed out the limb and blocked it all up. This is the base of the limb before I finally blocked it up.
My wife is 5' 2 & 3/4" tall.

The size of your trees throws me off.
The largest tree on my 58 acres is 4 foot diameter (a Spruce). There are three (yes, I can count them that quickly) trees that size. Otherwise, my biggest are all in the 24" range.

Sheesh, that must have taken all day.
Do you have a ripping chain on that?
I own an Alaskan sawmill as well but I haven't gotten around to buying a ripping chain.

I cut the tree off the neighbors fence.
The tree was over the hill with a 20' drop. After I cut up the limb wood, I tried to pull the trunk up the hill with the tractor.
Not happening.
My friend has a crane so we used it to get the trunk and the firewood.

Used a 10x10 cargo tarp to sling a few loads of the firewood up the hill

Log has some really nice character so we unloaded it at the log deck.
I will slab some lumber from this, or turn it into firewood.
It is a very solid piece but has a little dry rot at the base.
Crane operator said it is close to 2,000 lbs.

Looks like trying to push it over didn't work. Over 4 feet in dia. WOW! My 20" bar would of been like spitting at it.
