i thought id show a couple pics of the manifold with turbo loosley bolted on. ive been working on the soa and am pretty much done except for getting front drive shaft extended and a couple small things. anyways hopefully the turbo will be done by thursday, going to shushwap on friday.

Forgive me for asking a question that might seem a little naive, are you gonna use a blockoff plate on the old exhaust exit or weld it up? That you have welded the old manifold I am assuming that it is actually cast steel and not iron. I am no welder. Just asking questions so that I can feign intelligence when the occasion might arise in the future. Looks great. I am having twinges of admiration and envy.

Cool! . Where did you buy the turbo and how much was it if you don't mind disclosing that information? The added ponies will be welcome! :)

I am surprised there is that much room in the engine compartment to allow the turbo to be mounted that far away. So I assume this is going in a 60 series?

a whistle is much better than a rumble and cloud of smoke, in other words i got to go for a rip in the new improved cruiser today. i worked on it for about 8 hours yesterday, pulled the oil pan, welded in a threaded bung, installed a drain line for oil and feed line with a t at the sending unit, pulled the old exhaust apart and joined it to the turbo and then fabbed up the intake between the turbo and intake manifold. then today i installed the air filter and took it for a rip. wow what a difference, i dont have the fuel adjusted or the new exhaust "i'm replacing the old with 2.5" and a hushpower 2", or the new air intake, but what a difference. it's a definite improvement and really pics up around 2200 rpm but i can feel it at about 1200. i did also notice the exhaust to be quieter and got the boost up to about 16 psi at close to 3000 rpm. now to answer questions: i did use a blockoff plate for the old exhaust port, bought the merkur turbo off ebay for about $220 said and done, theres actually a fair amount of room still in the engine compartment of my 83 bj60. pics tonight

Sounds great!!!! That turbo might be nicely matched to the engine. I am hoping mine is. I will post up my pics tonight on another thread I had going.

I had mine running last night. But the truck is nowhere near being able to drive yet. But I have my engine compartment finished.

Cheers. Whats your psi at normal highway speeds. And normal rpm(2400-2600)? I want to set my turbo up at 12-14 psi.

When you see my wastegate and the angle it dumps at, it would be perfect for the way you are clocked on the manifold. It would dump straight down.

16 is a bit higher than I would want run all the time.... but if your lower at normal not high rpm. I really don't know what the long term damage could be. The botton end should be able to hold. Only issue may be the pre cups where the force on them thru the holes could be too high.. Maybe.

But Peter Straub on here(behemoth60) has his wastegate welded shut(I think). Mentioned running 20 psi. :)

so in the pics you can see kind of a goofy looking intake pipe, i didnt have enough room to bend a 90 with aluminum so this will have to do until i can find a 90 degree rubber elbow. also you can see a clear hose on the intake side of the turbo this runs to the boost gauge but i will probally put a plug here and move this closer to the intake manifold. also one of the metal coolant lines touches the exhaust, this will obviously have to be moved and i think i will wrap the exhaust with some sort of insulation later. the air filter on it is also temporary i have the stock air can that will be installed when i got time. my pyrometer doesnt seem to be working but since i dont have the fuel turned up and havent been driving it hard this can wait a little bit. lots to do, but at least i can take it down the around the block.

check intakehoses.com for some slick intake stuff

look especially at teh "cobra head" 90's, just got one to slap on my 40.

well i know they didnt have rubber 90's at crappy tire napa or home depot. ill have to get them from an automotive specialty place tommorrow, mopac had some but they were like $48 a piece. ill call around tommorrow and see what i can find. i probally only drove the cruiser for about 10 minutes but ive driven turbo'd vehicles before including a merkur xr4ti and my short term thoughts were that this turbo and motor are a good combination. your not going to be spinning tires at every stop sign but if your used to driving a stock cruiser, mine with 35's slowing it down, youll really appreciate the difference. i hope this gives you guys the motivation to take on this project. lets see some pics of your work brownbear!

Hey Cody, what gears do you have with the 35s. I wanted to spring over my BJ60 once I turbo it, I'm wondering if the turbo would make it bearable with 3.70s or if I need to go to 4.10s right away. Got any photos of your spring over??

Thanks...

Hey cody, looking good. Just have a look at my thread on here, Bj60 gets repainted and repaired. I posted pics of my turbo install on there.

I used a steel flange to my turbo, then welded exhuast pipe to the flange and bent it accordingly to go in the direction of the intake manifold, also using a swelling machine to bring it up to the next size of pipe to be the same size as the stock 90 degree elbow. Anyhow you can see it in my pictures. I also welded a NPT port on the side for my boost gauge. Then painted it in many coats of black to hide my welding :)

well, i got the exhaust built yesterday using 2.5" pipe and a flowmaster hushpower 2. got the intake changed and moved the boost pressure connector to the driver side. found a rubber elbow at greggs for $17 . bye the way dont use rubber fittings from the hardware store, they looked o.k. but under pressure and heat they popped like balloons. also i swapped out my front shocks for some off my friends 3/4 ton dodge we removed when we lifted it. the dodge ones were in better shape, a little softer and better min and max lengths. i had some beat up monroes before. the ride quality is much better now. also i got the pyrometer connected, it is pre turbo and the engine seems to be running a little hotter than i expected, as well the engine compartment seems to be hotter, im going to look into wrapping the exhaust and manifold with insulation today hopefully that will help. does anyone know if its bad to insultate the exhaust side of the turbo, and how can i post more pics on here it says i dont have enough space, only 6 pics max.

Try to make a shield, like the ones you see on a 13b-t. Just get some stainless sheet and cut and bend to the best abilty.

Might also be a good time for a fixed fan. I know the whole debate on these..:)

But it would help move air thru the compartment better.

well, the motors running a little hot, according to the pyrometer not the stock temp gauge. thought it was from heat radiated from the exhaust and turbo but turns out i have an exhaust leak near the turbo. i think at high boost it was pushing more exhaust out and the air filter was sucking hot air into it lowering boost pressure and increasing engine temps. i seemed to be running up to a max of 1100-1200 f but the temp would drop down to 800 quickly when i took my foot off the pedal. i think i fixed it but ill have to go for a drive in a bit and see. ive been putting in tons of hours into it lately and am getting a little burnt out. brought it in for an alignment and tires balanced, then i replaced leaky transfer pump, changed front diff oil, fixed rear shocks yesterday. it never ends.
