Ok so parts will be hear for the knuckle rebuild by early next week and with the wife being gone next weekend for a training class I am thinking I may take that opportunity to pull the axle apart (as I will have another vehicle).

Anyways,
- Grease/Lube which do you guys recommend? I know that someone said that the Redline CV-2 was great for the birfields/axles so I will grab two tubes of that. What other greases do I need?
- Rotors With the new rotors do I need to have them turned or should they be completely flat? Taking them to have the new studs pressed in so might as well get them turned as well if needed.
- Will be picking up brass drifts and a BFD (big f'ing deadblow) to do some of the work and then will rent a TRE puller from one of the auto parts stores.
- Still got about a gallon of 80w90 left over so I will drain the front diff and refill with fresh fluid.

Anything I am forgetting? Thinking I will probably get some new TRE boots but gotta see if my local places carry them. If not there is a Summit in Reno that I can hit up.

G, I may have a new set of 555 boots.. let me look, if I can find them, they are yours.

Sweet, I appreciate it. I am headed up to Sparks area to go fishing tomorrow (hopefully) and drop the tent off at a canvas repair place in hopes that they can replace/repair the bottom of the new/old tent.
Think you still have my number so if you do, text me and I will send you my address stuff.

Greg, I am going to be watching you closely. As soon as this semester is over I graduate and can get to the same projects that you have planned. I have been collecting the parts! They are burning a hole in my garage ;) good luck, I wish that I was closer we could have a project party!

I have the box of gloves and will hit up costco for some extra paper towels. So you are saying a third tube of the redline cv-2?

yep. gotta pack bearings on the spindle and hub plus grease splines etc plus fill the whole deal. IMO you cant have too much grease outside of the knuckle plus you will need to fill the knuckle housing up a bit with a grease gun

A few thoughts because I want to over-analyze this upcoming maintenance for you lol

Brake pads in good shape?

Rotate the tires?

Clean up and paint the axle housing?

Backing plate eliminator or leave stock?

Hope that gets the gears churning :)

Nice tent btw!

Oh yeah dude I will be doing a lot of that. Brakes are pretty much brand new, replaced the pads when I rebuilt the calipers last fall. Tires, well those will be replaced shortly after. Going to clean up and possibly paint everything. No backing plate eliminator, I had thought about it at one point but have since decided against it.

Alright so the wife leaves early tomorrow morning which means when I get home tomorrow night things will commence. Have Friday off so depending on how things progress I may just go into the wee hours of the morning to finish the job or do over the weekend.
Headed to a local shop at lunch to have the lugs pressed into the new rotors so they will be ready, $45/ea seems a bit steep but that was what every shop quoted me.
Got everything layed out on the work bench for me and will start with replacing the battery cables with the kit from @fourruner.
At lunch will also be picking up some Redline CV-2 ($12/ea 14oz tube at O'Reilly) plus going to look for a brass drift set (saw at either Napa or O'Reilly) along with other misc items.
Should make for a fun project over the weekend while the wife is out of town... oh yeah got to stock up on beer, going to be filling the growler with some local Irish Red!! Will post pics as things progress.

D'oh you are right... Oh well just means that I have to wait until the next day to take the hubs in to have the new lugs pressed in. Not that big of a deal really.

Ok so started pulling everything apart. Got the hub and rotor off and found this.

Also, how do you get that top seal out so you can remove the bearing and separate the hub from the rotor?

Big screw driver, small pry bar, a seal puller, drive bearing down and push the whole works out. Its junk and your new kit should have it's replacement included.

Cool tent Greg-O, might be some FRINGE benefits in your future... Ba-dum tsss!
When I rebuilt my knuckles, in order to get the inner wheel bearing/ race out of the back of the rotor I did the following: slide the rotor back onto the spindle. Thread on one of those big ole wheel bearing nuts, getting full thread engagement. Then, sliding the rotor with your hands to where it contacts the wheel bearing nut, give a couple yanks tapping the bearing and race out with the installed nut.

HTH

Oh, and IIRC on the first side I did the spindle wasn't installed and just the weight of it sitting on the ground was enough to hold place to tap the wheel bearings out.

Ok so dumb question....
Does the hub have to be pressed onto the rotor with the wheel studs? Mine does not want to separate even after banging on it with a sledge and using a small prybar?

And also comes the dust shield question.. My soft lines arent long enough to easily remove the shield but I also cant unscrew the soft line without removing the shield or completely removing the soft line?!

I disconnected the soft line at the backing plate and replaced with Napa units.

Well trying to remove the one bolt ended up snapping that one so I just went ahead and drilled all those rivets out. Went and got some m8x1.00 bolts/nuts to replace them. Now the small attachment for the banjo is separate from the dust shield.

Now on to figuring out how to remove the damn inner seal.

Seal puller, looks like a mini ice pick.

Inner axle seal G?

Here is Jonesy's video on a 80, not much difference....

Inner axle seal is around 28:38 on the ticker... Screwdriver and channellocks.. I have a bar that I made that is bent over at the end (90 hook/lip) and I welded a striking plate on it for a little extra OOMPH when needed.
