Wel $*&%, time for new oil pan?

Really hope it ain't so but the old gasket for the plug cracked when I put it back on apparently cuz it was dripping like this. Of course that was after a gallon of oil was in the system. Went to NAPA and grabbed a replacement gasket and oil but still dripping like this. Plug is torqued to spec and a little more (25ftlbs) but still dripping.

Any ideas? Time for a new plug or a new pan?

Buy another plug from the dealer maybe it will seal!

Just use a fat bead of RTV around the rim of the plug. Screw it in some and let it tack up for 15-20 mins then screw it in more and it will gradually seal.

I did what nevergiveupyota said on mine. My oil pan has a small ding at the base of where the gasket sits, so oil would drip out. Used rtv and leak free for a few years now. Of course to be on the safe side, I put fresh rtv on wit every oil change.

Thanks F @NeverGiveUpYota .. Ended up having some blue RTV still and did like you said. Seems to have stopped the leak almost completely. So looks like I have something else to add to the procedure when I change the oil now. Saves me from having to invest in a new oil pan at the moment, and I was thinking of "while Im in there" things to do. May still do the new pan down the road but can live with the RTV addition for now.

Well two days without any drips so looks like the RTV has kept it clean.

Hunh. Take it from a female novice driveway mechanic from CT. :)

Greg,

my pan eventually gave up the ghost at the spot welds on the skid plate.

Beano got me a new pan and gasket.. good to go

Yeah I already have the pan gasket from him from when I redid my head a couple years ago. Pan is showing up on ToyotaPartsDeal as ~$185, which really isn't too bad. Last month or so I haven't been able to get a hold of Onur, so been having to purchase elsewhere for immediate need stuff (which ultimately has been small stuff under his $100 threshold, so no big deal).

Looks like the pan will be on the To-Do List down the road, this year I am focusing on getting the exhaust finished, painting the truck and then either the EFI system or maybe pick up one of Jason's (@reevesci) new roof racks.
Painting necessitates the swap of two doors which means I am going to have to convert some stuff over so got to figure out what is worn enough to warrant replacement.

I wouldn't go EFI.. just get a good rebuild Jim C carb.

you won't gain much and you'll lose out on originality. A well sorted carb is reliable and old school original cool.

what color are you painting?

You know Milo, people say that but I feel like I have been fighting with the carb (and a losing battle at that) since I purchased the truck. While I love it that is the one thing that I am on the fence about with regards to which is better, 3Fe vs. 2F. For me the benefits would mainly be seen in the ability to save SOME gas vs. my everyday driving. On avg with a 70/30 split for driving (hwy/city) I get about 8mpg. Lots of city driving and cold temps where she has to warm up a little longer nets me close to 7.5mpg. Conversely, when I do lots of highway driving I can do MUCH better, getting between 11 and 13mpg. But I have never topped 13mpg. For instance, I just filled up this weekend when I ran to get oil for my oil change. So far I have driven a total of about 30 miles, according to my odo, and already I am somewhere between 1/4 and 1/3 tank of gas. This is mainly city driving, with speeds not reaching more than 45mph for more than a mile or two.

I know better than to chase the mpg on this truck for multiple factors but that is close to abysmal mpg. Sure there are lots of factors that play into why I am getting mileage like this but for the majority of it, I could see spending $1800 on an EFI setup helping lots of things including highway driveability.

I have a complete EFI (2FE kit) and a few spots on the new rack project... HA!

At 8 mpg, something definitely isn't right. My cruiser fully loaded (overloaded) with roof rack packed, aired down tires, 45 gallons of fuel, 12 gallons of water, driving on very rough dirt trails for hundreds of miles, never getting out of second gear, hubs locked, some low range 4WD on hills ...averages about 9 mpg after 250 miles of THAT.
Verified numerous times.

You know Greg!
I would just go ahead and rebuild the carb. By any of them carb gurus here on mud.
Yes it is pricey to rebuild. but once you have it done you won't be sorry.
I had mine rebuilt and I think it's the best thing I did.
Truck starts and idles well.!
Carbs are just frustrating!

Greg,

have you tried a freshly rebuilt and tuned carb?

I can see upwards of 14mpg on my desmogged Jim C carb..

what color are you painting ?

Yeah I am still running @HemiAlex's carb which runs a lot better than my carb was. I just finished the rebuild on my carb so now I need to just get available time to do the swap to my carb to see what is going on. Been using BeBe on the weekends to help the SIL/BIL move into their new place so haven't had the availability to swap carbs and possibly deal with any issues.

Mind you I am sure part of it is that I am completely desmogged beside the carb and dizzy. Believe timing is right about 10* with the fuel screw being 3.25 to 3.5 turns out. Pretty sure that my cat is gone too as I can smell gas when she has been sitting and idling for a bit, not super bad but when outside the vehicle I can smell it. I did check the plugs a few months ago and all looked good and really they were replaced along with wires and air filter when I rebuilt the head this time in 2016.

Jason @reevesci gonna send you a message.
