Builds Finally got my own...Meet BeBe (24 Viewers)

Last night I took a stab at a couple things that you guys brought up...
@NeverGiveUpYota I lubed those pivots like you said on the firewall brace. When I disconnected the arm and linkage to see if I felt any resistance I could not really feel anything as I had nothing to go against but lubed them anyways.

Then I went through like @OSS said and did an okie rebuild a few times to see what that might do. Revved her up to 3k then stuffed my welding glove over the top and choked her out. Did this 4 or 5 times with spraying carb cleaner down the carb.

Then decided to spray carb cleaner all over and just clean the entire thing. Found what may be a small vacuum leak at the very base of the carb on the front. Need to completely remove the entire air cleaner assembly and get at the base of the carb with the spray tube to concentrate the spray a bit more. Either it is the base of the carb or the primary throttle shaft is leaking.

For now she is returning to idle like normal. Talking with the guy at Napa that knows me, was funny when he saw the two bottles of carb cleaner and said "Yeah its been freakin' cold out, hell I don't want to work right when it's this cold." So maybe it was just the cold coupled with the winter gas causing some issues in the carb. I will run her today and tomorrow and see how she does but doing a few errands today there were no issues with the high idle like has been happening.

No lube. Just clean really well. I wire brushed mine. Lube will attract dust and become something that WILL impede the pivoting.

The stuff that I have been using is a lithium lube that is supposed to not attract anything or get tacky. I have been using it on exterior doors as the house and they never seem to attract anything so we will see.

FINALLY got some time to dick with the carb. Luckily still had @HemiAlex spare he gave me, dont worry he and I have been chatting with all his carb issues and I can still use. So owe him more than just a few beers!! Seriously in debt to you dude.

Took me a couple hours to get everything off and on again. Put his carb on and got it all buttoned up and on the initial run around town to test all I can say is... F#$% does it run nice! Got a ultra sonic cleaner coming next week so going to disassemble my carb and throw all the parts in there. Thinking of doing a couple runs... one with actual carb cleaner (have a gallon of it still), one with something like Simple Green and then one in just plain water (seeing as you have to wash it after the carb cleaner.

Think my carb issues are related to either the bad ICS that I got from CCOT (going to have to purchase one from CityRacer) and/or the Accelerator Pump being crappy and sticking (which I have an OEM from CityRacer for this rebuild).

Think I may also need to replace my carb base plate. Does this look like it has been "fixed" before? Really all I have left is the base plate, shield is almost non-existent.

Looking down the intake I did not see anything that looked like a crack, so I am happy about that!!

Alex's carb and my carb sniffing butts.. Had to swap over a few things, capped off the AC Idle up since his did not have the linkage.

And then I had ONE casualty. Was trying to put the choke breaker back together and one of the nipples snapped off. Not a huge deal as I am normally right there when running the truck with the choke pulled and normally walk out after a couple minutes and push it in completely.

Anyone know where I can get this green/black valve or something to replace?

Also ignore me if I am wrong but you don't want to use simple green on aluminum, I think it eats into it or etches it? And your base plate.. I was told that that was how they come from the factory. Ugly. Mine was cracked and was pulling air so I chipped off what I could and jiggled some JB Weld in and on it and let it sit overnight sitting upright. Its solid now.

@NeverGiveUpYota is right. The GREEN Simple Green cleaner will definitely etch aluminum. It even says so on the bottle. And it was confirmed by ignoring that warning and finding out myself.

The Simple Green you can use on aluminum (and is highly recommended and works awesome without a nasty smell) is called Extreme Simple Green Aircraft & Precision Cleaner. It comes in a blue bottle and the fluid is clear. The ultimate cleaning fluid.

I'd probably try to fix that choke breaker. Either epoxy/jb weld the nipple back on and clear the passage with a drill after it's hardened or drill and thread the plastic for a thread in barbed fitting.

Yeah I was thinking about trying that since it was a fairly clean break.
Thanks for the tips on the Simple Green. I will see what I can find at Lowes/HomeDepot, pretty sure I have seen the blue stuff there.

Currently have the plastic epoxy drying on the little VTV. Luckily it was a pretty clean break and it was clean itself so used a large paper clip to hold the piece in place and then coated the mating surfaces with a small amount (trying not to get it to squeeze into the orifice. After it setup for a few I then went around the outside of the break with a layer of the epoxy, will probably put a second layer just for good measure.

Was finally able to reinstall the VTV, broke it again the first time but I think that was more because of the fact that I did not let it cure long enough as it broke in the exact same spot and the epoxy pretty much just chipped off like no actual bonding happened. Went at it again and did a better job cleaning it, sanding down the surfaces lightly, etc. and then let it sit for a day and a half. Installed last night without breaking it again... whew.

This morning I used the choke to warm her up even though it was a little warmer (where system in right now where we are getting a lot of rain with lows in the mid-40s) and she started right up. Left the choke fully pulled out for a good 5 mins (normally I got back out and push the choke in a couple clicks after I hear the fan clutch kick down) and it seemed like the VTV and choke breaker were working properly. Crazy how badly I can tell my carb was running with Alex's installed now. It holds a nice, smooth idle at about 700rpm with the fuel screw turned out about 3.5 turns. No more weird sticking accelerator issue where SOMETHING would stick and cause the idle to hold at like 2k rpm at stop lights and in between shifts.

Was able to pick up this 6L ultrasonic cleaner coming which I was able to grab for $100. Looks to be purely chicom but if it works ONCE cleaning the carb good and then can be used to clean jewelry and small other things I will be happy. Looks like it should be here tomorrow.

@OSS and @NeverGiveUpYota I looked at my bottle of Simple Green at home (standard All-Purpose version) and I did not see anything about it not being safe for aluminum? At most it says... DO NOT USE ON SUEDE, LEATHER, UNFINISHED WOOD, OPALS OR PEARLS.

Man I’m really happy this is working out.

I just need to swap on my city racer carb and I can call my tune up done!

Did you get your CityRacer? Literally the swap took me all of maybe two hours this time, but I had prepped and marked everything with the blue painters tape beforehand to ensure that I knew which lines went where (and still had to hunt for one line for some reason).

interesting that they note that in their FAQs but nothing is noted on their info pages on each of the products... strange. However, it does reference just the straight All-Purpose, wonder if that is why they came out with the Extreme Aircraft and Extreme Motorsport versions.

And just checked the local Pick n Pull website, looks like I got a run this weekend as they apparently just got an 85 FJ60!!! Gonna see what all is there and what is in good shape.

Google it. Lots of references to it not being good for aluminum.

Ok just pulled up their full FAQ and they state that the "Extreme Aircraft and Precision, Pro Automotive and Pro HD" are all purpose built for the aircraft industry and thus are safer on aluminum products than the standard (green bottle) All-Purpose cleaner. The (purple bottle) Pro HD cleaner can be had at Lowe's and Home Depot, so looks like I am running to HD when the cleaner gets here.

Yes that’s the stuff Fred recommended instead... the aircraft one.

Its been in the back of the truck for about a week. Just waiting for the right time that the weather is good and the truck isn't going to burn me.

I can get it in and out in about 30 mins. Not a lot of hassle.
