I'm looking for a Fairey overdrive unit since my mechanic recommends the one on my FJ40 is replaced but I can't find them anywhere. Any ideas?

Check out cruiserparts.net. They had some used units when i checked a few months ago.

Wouldn’t a 5 speed also be an option in this situation? Doesn’t the fifth gear act like an overdrive?

It would be, the time and price snowballs quite a bit once you start to look at it. Bellhousings, adapters, driveline modifications, tranny hump modifications, etc. all start to add up quickly in both time and money.

I meant the h55’s, I thought the y were a direct bolt in?

The Fairey for the LC had some unfortunate design deficiencies, and there are no parts being produced. The shaft splines that wear out also wear out the splines on the trans tailshaft, but a overdrive delete doesn't require replacing the shaft. When they work, they're great, but sadly when Fairey's fail these days it makes little sense to try to save them.

Not necessarily. Just removing the Fairey off the back of the transfer case is your first and cheapest option. Lots of people drive their cruisers with the original gearing. They weren't designed for highway driving, especially now, with everybody doing 75 or 80 mph. The most economical thing for you to do is an overdrive delete, but it sucks after having that extra gear. If you have plenty of cash an H55 is a pretty sweet way to go. Not sure where you are , but Georg Esterer in Stockton CA might be able to help you decide. Check out Cruiserbrothers.com.
