Has your 80 ever left you stranded or in a bad situation?

Technically what was the problem?

How did you fix it?

I’m trying to get a feel for what could happen and see if I would be prepared if it was me.

So far for me
1. Birf failure (never thought it would me btw) and was able to remove the driveline, drive plates, and press the CDL and drive home.
2. Starter stuck on….beat on it. Never stuck again

Phil

could you elaborate a bit on what exactly you removed to make the rig driveable again when the Birf conked out, and how you went about it?

I exactly removed the drive plates off the front axle
Removed the front driveline
Pressed the CDL

E is there a specific term that you are not familiar with?

I had some fuel delivery issues...

Once it was a fried electrical connector beneath the driver's side second row of seats....
jumped 12 volts straight to the fuel pump and it got me home

Once it was a bad fuel pump resistor...jumped the relay and left the jumper in place...

The only time I've ever been stranded in the 8 cruisers I've owned was the capacitor went out in my 40 on the points and it left me stranded in a campsite in Wyoming...

bk Is the connector you fried in the cab or under the cab of an 80 and how does it relate to the fuel pump? Is the connector part of the fuel pump circuit? Just gathering info

Thanks Phil

Dan - did that pizza have mushrooms on it?

Phil - I've heard of others (Greg aka SkytoSkydad) that have had the electrical harness fail on them while driving. It was the section of the harness that passes at the rear of the engine. Some movement of the wires would probably give some temp relief if you know that this is the problem.

Leaky PS pump. Not sure if it would leave somebody stranded with no PS.

Would not leave you stranded, just with very tired arms. (PS without pressure is worse than MS)

This is the reason full hydraulic steering is not technically street legal.

I'm not sure these qualify or not.

The first time, my starter contacts failed after several days of click-click-start. They failed on a Sunday with the truck in my garage. I had to remove the contacts and clean them before an important meeting on Monday morning. So I was "stranded" but at the best possible place.

The second time, my 2 yo Optima quit without any warning. I was in the parking lot of American Toyota after picking up some parts. Another club member was there at the same time so he pulled next to me while I pulled out the jumpers and within a minute or two I was on my way. So I was "stranded" but at the second best possible place.

Cruiser Karma. :D

I've been pretty lucky (or just drive a great rig :D)

I had my starter lock up on me once, but I wasn't far from home and was able to limp back and take care of it. A couple times now, I've had my driver's side rear tire die on me -- once a blow out the other just went flat while I was on the freeway. AAA took care of the first one, I changed the 2nd tire.

Just in case...I take tools with me on road trips (socket set, pliers, screwdrivers, BFH, etc.) and carry a spare set of belts, extra oil and grease, a few extra bulbs, and a chunk of hose (in case the PHH blows). Oh...my FSM comes along too.

Never had the 80 leave me stranded, closest was when the alt got crammed with water/mud and stopped charging. Drove about 2 hours home with it not charging, but made it home fine.

I did have a 40 leave me 'stranded' kinda, while on a trail rearend got bouncy (dumbass Chevy V8 with a carb that wouldn't fawking run at all!), snapped the pinion gear in the rearend, driveshaft went flying. We figured ok that sucks but we can just drive out on the front drive only. Well not that easy, what was left of the pinion gear had settled back into the ring-gear and jammed it, so gears jammed when you went forward. So had to be winched (dragged) sideways up a hill to then be pulled backwards on a side-hill fire road. Then the fun started, jacked the rearend up with a highlift, pulled the axles, pulled the entire rearend carrier removed what was left of the pinion, put it all back together, including the gearlube we saved in a water bottle. Stuffed a rag into the pinion hole in the front of the diff and drove home on the front drive only. Times like that you're really glad you've pulled apart a diff by yourself before so you know what you're doing in there, since it was nasty and cold on the mountain. Making it more fun is it wasn't level ground, so on the high-lift we had to have 3 people hold the vehicle from falling over...all fun.. :D

the PHH on the way to work one morning. That sucked

I now carry a few feet of light gauge wire, some electrical tape, crimp connectors and crimpers in the Rx bag. Probably never happen again but at least now I know what to look for.

Rubber ATF hose. Mine burst at the bottom of the radiator.

This happened the night before we were going on a long camping trip. Thanks god it happened a block away from home.

I'm also a member of the Head Gasket Club.

sorry but there is hardly enough time left in the day to answer this one :flipoff2: lemme try a few

head gasket - said fawk it and drove it to the dealer anyway (was within 10 days of when i bought it under certified warranty)
piston slap - drove home very carefully from a wheeling trip
birfield - took out the short side (broken side) stuffed tshirt in and partially reassembled pressing cdl so i could drive the 3-1/2 hrs home from wheeling trip
neutral safety switch going kaput - somehow started on about the 1,000th try so could replace it on my terms
starter - several times with most times being able to whack it back to life so i could replace on my terms (first time it went it cost me the ability to get a full family pic since we were on our way to do that when this happened and my mother-in-law passed away a few days later) - btw, this is what taught me to learn how to do this stuff myself
cracked frame - fixed
constant blowing ign fuse due to buttmunchers doing electrical work on truck (see misc posts about people in va)

could be one or two others, can't think any more. some of the above was my fault, some due to poor maint and some just my karma.
