So the LC Lover came with 33x10.5s and after-market rims. I wasnt a huge fan of the rims and I had some beautiful, shiny and polished factory rims I love the look of.

The tires on the aftermarket rims were basically brand new. My thought was to repurpose them and put them on the original RIMS but when I took them to Discount Tire they said that they would not fit because the rims are only 15X6 and you need a minimum of a 7.5 inch wheel to put 33s on.

So I put some 30x9.5s BFG All Terrain on them and bolted them on. The look good, but with a 3" lift I am left missing the larger tires.

Yesterday I was trolling bringatrailer.com and there was a FJ60, with factory rims rocking 33x10.5s on her. And that got me thinking "could" put on the 33s sitting in my garage and return the BFGs and save $1000 to put towards a EFI set up (possibly sniper).

Anyone care to share their opinion on this setup? Is it safe to roll on 15x6 rims with 33x10.5rq5s? Advantages? Disadvantages?

BFG doesn’t recommend it and many shops won’t mount them because of that - but plenty of guys have run 10.5 tires on the stock 6” wide rim. Probably tens of thousands of people. In the past, we could all mount 10.5” wide tires on the 6” stock rims and nobody cared. Then suddenly a few years ago, BFG changed their rules and said it’s forbidden.

It’s definitely safe - history proves that, but when you look at a 10.5” wide tire mounted on the stock 6” wheel, you can clearly see that the sidewalls get pulled in a bit more than they should. A 10.5” wide tire fits best on a 7” or even 8” wide wheel.

I did 33x10.5 on a stock wheel. It worked. It wasn’t ideal. I got 30,000 miles before the tires crowned and were worn. They also cracked due to an unwritten issue that BFG has.

I went to 16x5.5 70 series wheels and a 255/85r16 (33x9.5-16) and the handling is greatly improved and I can run the tires at a much higher psi to reduce rolling resistance and prevent weird wear.

I won’t go above a 30x9.5r15 on a stock wheel or I’ll do 16 inch wheels and a narrow tire.

Good call. I like the tall and narrow look.

I'd venture to say close to half the 60 owners on this forum run, or have run, 33x10.50's on the stock rims. Find a different tire shop to have them mounted if that's what you want to run.

Great looking truck, by the way!!

FJ40 steelies with 33x10.50x15... These wheels are the same width as FJ60 chrome wheels. I bought the tires at Discount at a good price but went to an independent tire shop to mount them since Discount would not do it for reason mentioned above by @OSS .

Thanks for the confirmation. I had the feeling it was more of a sales thing TBH, but I also thought of the safety. Glad to hear it is pretty normal as an option!

FJ-40s are only 5.5” wide…more narrow than the stock 60 wagons wheels.

33x10.50 on either of these wheels is a tried and true combo.

Any good Indy/4x4/Cruiser shop will mount them.

Box stores (Walmart, Discount, NTB etc.) will not due to liability concerns.

Find a good mom and pop tire shop are rock the 33s.

I run 33x10.50 Maxxis RAZRs on 15x5.5” Cruiser steelies on the 89 4Runner
