Is some version of manual [boat or other] winch, with detachable hand crank a viable/reasonable idea for someone who anticipates seldom using the winch as extractor?

Come-along. Black Rat also makes a manual device that works like a winch. In a pinch, the Hi-Lift can double as a winch though I've never seen it done in person. Sounds lethal to me.

Beowulf: "Sounds lethal to me." Is this a good thing?

Depends on whether or not you can convince your ex-wife to jack the Hi-jack or whether you have to do it yourself.

I've done it with the HL. Not too bad.

Bongani or anyone in USA:

Who makes the double-tire, double-jerry can [bumper] assembly shown on page 1 of this thread? If this is made by you, Bongani, can you make available inspection drawings or plans?

I take it you are talking about this photo?

I found it on the www.landcruiserclub.co.za website. There is however no further detail on it.

Some time ago I experiemented with winching with a hi-lift jack. I then put this article together.

Just once correction to the article. The chain should be wrappeda round the foot/saddle of the jack as well contrary to how it was shown in this photo.

I have tested and used the Tirfor type winches, and found them to be quite effective, especially for road repair (felled trees) and for shifting the rear of a vehicle with a front mounted winch.

Here is the Black Rat winch I am using:

I have also gone to great lengths to lighten my front winch system, getting the M8000 and associated hardware to under 50lbs., which helps front suspension control, etc.

Scott,

Can that Black Rat Tirfor winch be used with synthetic rope instead of wire rope?

neat gizmo, but the Hi lift can pull something like 5000 lbs, quite a bit more.

Btw, the word "Tirfor" is a pun in French, it is the phonetic version of "Tire fort" which means "Pull Hard". An equivalent in English would be "Pulard" or something like it. Trivia bit for the day...

Beowulf,

Good question. Unfortunately, the answer is no. The unit requires a metal cable for the teeth to engage properly. You cannot even use standard winch line with it. The cable must be kept relatively clean and lubed with standard motor oil.

I like the high-lift as an option too, but the great benefit of the Tirfor is the 60' of cable. It is a much more efficient operation (those who have rigged a Hi Lift know, painfully so). Not saying it is better overall, but more efficient and can run much longer distances without disconnect, which can be a valuable safety feature...

so these teeth are chomping on the cable to hold things in place?

It is a knurled jaw. There are two sets of jaws that pass the wire rope through. It is like pulling on a rope, hand over hand...

you'd think that would damage the rope...

How about an annual expedition style trip for 80's forum members?

Maybe an excursion down to Baja? Or a trip through the 4corners states... hit the mountain passes of Colorado(Ouray,Silverton), Chaco Canyon, Mesa Verde and the Canyonlands area of Utah?

Any interest in something like that?

That would be sweet, but what a job to organize!

What an excellent thread. So many great ideas!

I've certainly changed my view on how I want to build my trucks.

So, if I'm reading the above correctly, the best thing to do is the traditional method of cutting into the muscle between the two puncture wounds, then physically sucking, with your mouth, the poison from the wound and spitting it to the side? I guess that makes sense, because of the high metabolic rate. I totally agree with you.

No I think he means apply a pressure bandage and get the victim some professional help asap and dont forget to identify the snake if possible.

Cutting and sucking disappeared from 1st aid books 40 years ago:D
Once bitten the venom disperses into the body immediately ,it does not hang around in one spot;)

Having said that, snakes use up a lot energy making that venom so they dont like to waste it on non food purposes.
Make lots of noise when moving through the bush and they will get out of the way if you give them time.

My post was sarcastic. Only an idiot would think that sucking on a snakebite would do anything but draw blood from the victim.

That tool looks useful for sure... but i wouldn't want to operate it. It would scare me to death that it would let go and im standing right in it's path. but i'd surely still use it... just cringing my teeth the whole time
