It has been a while since I have gotten to do any work in the garage. But, today I started on the SOA on the rear axle. I bought Mopar spring mounts part# 4120074, they come 2 per box and were only $8.00 a box. So I bought 2 boxes to do the front and rear axles. While I was at it all the bushings were replaced and I am fabbing new rear shackles to accept 5/8" grade 8 bolts. I need to pick up my new u-bolts and set the pinion angle. Hopefully the rear axle will be finished tomorrow.

I went down to the Dodge dealer today to get a set of these spring mounts and this number (4120074) was not a good number. He tried a couple different ways with no luck. Could you check your receipt to see what number is on it? Or maybe you could tell me what vehicle/year you used to order the mounts? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Handcannon (Don)

I will check when I get home from work on Sunday. I gave the parts guy the number and description (spring pad), he pulled out the Mopar catalog to verify.

Don,

Here is a photo of the receipt, I hope this helps.

Thanks!! I'll give that a try at the dealer.

Tony

I got a chance to get away from work early enough today to get to the Dodge dealer before the parts dept. closed. All I needed to do was add the "P" to the 4120074 number and it worked. I now have a set coming for pickup on Friday. The "P" designates the performance catalog. The parts guy even got out the performance catalog and showed me a picture that looked exactly like the ones in your picture. To me $8 is dirt cheap for something like this that would take me a while to fab.

Do you have any tips/pointers from your install that might keep me from doing things the hard way?

Thanks
Don

Don,

Glad to hear you got them ordered. Take good measurements before taking anything apart and prep the area you are going to weld.

Good luck and post your progress

Tony

I finished up the rear brake lines this morning. Went down and purchased a cheapy double flare tool. This is the first time I have used one of these and I have to say it was really easy!!! I read posts about the tools not working correctly and bad experiences with the cheap tools, so I was not expecting too much from this tool. I followed some tips from other posts, cut the brake line with a cut off wheel (nice and square), de-burr the edges, use the collet to measure the tubing to be flared, tightly clamping the tool on the brake line is key.

The finished job......WHEW!!!!

the SOA looks nice! good job! Also good job on the purchase for your boy!

I recently started my insanity by buying my 13 year old a 72 FJ. But our was not as complete as yours. In fact it is barely a rolling chassis, no motor and everything being hung to the frame with the bare minimum amount of fastners.

Well his 17 year old sister got "jealous" so I found a second FJ, this time with a motor, basically complete, but being in the midwest…it is riddled with Rust.

So now I have three projects I am working on (if you count my tacoma).

Our goals on both the FJ's are

SOA's,
tube fenders
capable trail rigs
complete body reconditions

on the son's we are putting a Ford 302 in it with an auto behind it. Dana 44 rear axle with a disc converted front land cruiser axle. Full comp interior roll cage. riding on 33" tires.
corner armor with sliders and other varius protection (he is a boy after all…I expect him to be more adventous than the girl)

on the daughters we are sticking with the 2f motor with 4 speed, trying to keep the stock appearence as much as possible with the exception of corner armor, sliders and 31-33" tires (she really wants to put 35" on it.

Her FJ also came with soft doors and a bikini top (the arguements are already starting over who gets to use it)

I am trying to let them make most of the decisions on what parts to put on their personal rig etc, just guiding them in the right direction. So in other words, their complete plans for their rigs are not complete.

WOW!!!!! and I thought I had a lot on my plate!!!

Best of luck with all those projects, I would like to see your projects. How about starting a thread about father and son, or father and daughter projects I am sure there are more out there.

Damn good idea! I am about to leave work for the day though, I'll try and start it tonight or tomorrow, but you have to be a part of the thread:D

I don't have any kids, but my nephew is one heck of a mechanic. When I turned 50 six years ago my wife and I had a family trust written up. I told the lawyer that I wanted to put my 77 FJ-40 in the trust and she replied that cars are not usually put into trusts. I told her I was the original owner on a Land Cruiser and that it wasn't just any car. Now trust states that the 40 goes to my nephew.

Legally I can't sell the Cruiser unless I get the trust amended (I know that is a bit of a stretch but it sounds good). I live in a resort town and am frequently approached by people wanting to look it over. A few of those bug me about selling it and I frequently have notes left on it from people who want to buy it. I tell them I can't unless I get my wife and I's trust amended, which would cost several hundred dollars so I can't legally sell it to them. That usually ends that line of conversation.

Rockcod, giving your son this vehicle at such a young age might draw comments from some about spoiling him, one person here already did, but I'm sure it was a tongue-in-cheek type comment. With the pride of ownership and you working on it together you have the potential for a lifelong father and son experience that will also be a part of his education toward self-reliance. I would not say you are spoiling him, I would say you are a wise parent!
