Anybody else have all 4 bolts on the t-stat housing shear off???

I've heard of issues with one or two, but dayum, not ALL of them!

I need inspiration (and most likely, parts).

edit: Is it worth trying to drill the s*** out, re-tap it, etc, or just find a replacement?

Big deal, if they all sheared then just lift the top half off and get your vice grips out. Or, if they sheared flush then drill them for a screw extractor.

Get a new housing. It is not that expensive from toyota, and the cheaper aftermarket options are fine too. The used parts from SOR are about 60$.
there is not much room there for re-tapping the holes.

or just get a used housing. I had to do this twice now on both trucks I did the thermostats on...

Yup. That's what I was looking for. If I can get a replacement for $60, screw the headache of retapping all four. They broke off way down there.

After 3 weeks of PB Blaster-ing it knowing it was going to suck ass.

And when you put it back together, use some good anti-seize on the entire length of the bolt and under the bolt head, torque to spec (edit - when using anti seize, torque 15% lower than spec!) , then it'll never happen again.

But to answer your ? I have never had that many shear off. MIke

Anti-seize is your friend. Hard to think of a place I don't use it.

just jumping on the anti seize wagon.

i have worked on machines i built new...taking parts off ten years later...parts that only the "factory" serviced...boy was i glad i used the stuff.

This is very, very common. Get a replacement unit, they are not hard to find.

Just make sure you make a youtube video of when you drive it into the ocean. I cracked my thermostat housing once when bolting it together. The two pieces of the thermostat housing are not the best quality.

If I could drive my 60 to the ocean, it'd be running fine.

Driving it to the desert and torching it.... that's called job security, but I'd hafta say it was stolen, since most everybody in the FD knows I have one. Some even know I have 2.... :p

i have sworn, and i have walked away for a minute, but the thought of just dumping it and walking away, has never crossed my mind....i still think about adding more of them to the fleet.
