Hello all,
This is my first post, but I have been reading for a year now. I have a 2007 Cruiser and I love it!!! I have nitto nt404 tires and the fronts are shot. The backs are at 55% the dilemma is do I get 4 new tires that will actually do the cruiser justice or do I just buy two new tires? Please keep in mind I live in Phoenix AZ and I commute 60 miles a day. So they would need to be 90% highway 10% off road. Please give me your input. I am a new dad so the $$$$ is a consideration too.
Thank you in advance,
Nick

For the replacement of all four I was looking at the bfg rugged terrain TA. Let me know what you think.
Thank you,
Nick

i would say replace all 4 (and sell the 2 good old ones on CL if you need the cash), that way you are resetting the clock on your tire system. then rotate every 5k miles so you dont end up in the same situation again. BFGs are a solid choice. get the 33" equivalents, you'll be happy you did.

Nick,

Comgratulations on being a dad and the Land Cruiser.

I would get all 4 tires. Maybe some Nitto AT. Some people are getting over 40,000 miles on them. Just make sure you rotate and get them balanced. Also sure your alignment is good too.

You can get lifetime alignment these days for a reasonable flat fee and also with balancing/rotations. Good, luck and let us know how it goes.

First, get all four replaced. On an AWD truck this is pretty much a no brainer, and will make it easier for you from a rotation standpoint.

Second part of my answer is, "it depends". Are you looking at getting some beefier looking tires? Do you go off road alot, or hardly at all? For that many miles, you'll want something that wears like iron, and two tires come to mind in the off road catagory - BFG AT/KOs and Michelin LTX AT/2's.

If you're looking at a regular street tire, the gold standard (and factory issued) Michelin LTX MS or MS/2 is actually a great tire, and lasts a heck of a long time. You'll get the most gas mileage out of a tire like that, too. Those are what's currently on my Suburban, and I can't wear the damn things out. I'd love to put 285's on it but I gotta burn through the Michies first.

Ultimately the choice is yours, but replace all four of them (ideally all five of them) and go from there.

I would suggest staying on top of your tire balance. I just had a problem where one shop with "state of the art" equipment couldn't balance Toyo OC AT's after three attempts. Had to take to another shop and they did it right the first time. The tire guys often have no idea what they're doing. Road force balancing is another option that some select.

Are you going to keep the same size tire? If so then get 4, if not, get 5 and rotate and balance every 5k miles. I highly suggest the Falken Rocky Mountain ATS tires. I picked up a set of 5 for under $1000 mounted and balanced from Discount tire with certs. Best part is they will rotate and balance as often as you want and they have a 50,000 mile tread wear warranty. they have an aggressive look and have performed well off road and agre great in the rain. My LC is my office and I drive a lot, I like these tires.

This is all great advice here.

I have the stock Michelin LTX MS tires on my rig and have seriously beat on them on gravel roads. On pavement, they are a wonderful tire...you cannot do better on the 100 for pavement driving. If the 10% offroad you are looking for means gravel and dirt roads, the Michelin's are up for that task. Mud, not so much...

I have put serious miles on these tires and they just don't seem to wear all that much. I am sorta impatiently waiting for them to wear so I can get new tires. A great, long lasting tire.

The LTX is a great tire but if you're going to do any offroading theres a reason the BFG AT is the best selling off road tire probably of all time and lasts a long time too.

I commuted 140 miles a day for four years on my BFG AT-equipped 4Runner (285/75-16). I rotated them every 5,000 miles (every other month) and they wore amazingly well. Sold them on Yotatech with 50,000 miles and 13/32" tread depth (new was 17/32") for more than half what it cost me to replace them. Below is a picture after 50,000 miles. YMMV.

I put 275/70-18 BFG ATs on my Land Cruiser first chance I had and haven't looked back. I run a five tire rotation every 5,000 miles.

I must have bought the two bad set of BFG ATs. One was completely worn down after 25k on a Suburban. The other was completely worn after about 30k on an FJ60. Both trucks were freshly aligned and the tires were rotated regularly.

Yes I've heard the BFG's are sometimes hit and miss, but for the most part, they are easily the longest lasting true AT tire out there.

If you're not offroad too much, and when you do go, it's mainly forest service roads or dry backcountry, the LTX AT2's will be your best bet. They are a very quiet tire too, and although BFG's are not noisy by any means, the LTX's are much quieter overall on the highway, and will likely last even longer with proper rotations - Many have gotten 80-90k miles out of a set which is pretty amazing.

I purchased my 100 about 3 months ago and last week installed 285 BFG Rugged Terrain and am very happy with them. I do 99% of my driving on the street but wanted a tire with a little more of an aggressive look than a plan street tire. I have run BFG AT and BFG mud on other vehicle and talking street performance only these tires rock. Quiet, smooth (even with E rating), rain performance was great. I have about 1000 mile on them and have not noticed any mileage drop from the stock tire which as a concern of mine.

Thank you all for the advice and input. It is an excellent point that all 4 should be replaced since it is all time 4 wheel drive. I will look into the michelins since almost all my driving is commuting, however my ego would prefer a more agrissive all terrain :).

I got 75,000 street miles out of our last set of Mich LTX M/S's on my wife's cruiser. I put a fresh set on last summer (20,000 miles ago) but I just took over the cruiser and will be upsizing. I'd be interested in selling them to you but I'm in Kentucky so not sure that will be practical.

I'm looking to upgrade to BFG's, but I had really great experience with Firestone Destination AT's on my Tundra. They ride great on the road, but have a nice aggressive look. Seemed to wheel pretty good but didn't get a chance to really put them to the test off road.

So I went to Big-O Tires today (our local chain in AZ) and after talking with them I chose the Nitto Crossteks. Same concept as the BFG's good on the highway, but slightly agressive looking. They have a 60K wear rating and they were on sale. I got 275 65 18's out the door for $915.00 with a free alignment and road hazard. I will post pics tomorrow. Thank you again for all the help.

ON a side note loving being a dad it is the best thing I ever done, next to meeting my wife of course. :p
