Hi guys, I have found myself in a bit of trouble. The short version is I need a replacement engine and preferably a good 5 speed for my 69/ FJ40. I am looking for the best solution for reliabulity and could obviously use a little more power. That old 1F sure screams getting onto the freeway, would a 2f cure this?
The longer version is my son borrowed my rig. He overheated it so badly that it just ran wild until it blew up. I have about twelve ways to turn it off from the drivers seat but I think he panicked. Any help with a source for a good engine would be super welcome.

Tons of options and lots of discussion on them

Are you going to do the work or have it done for you? I dont believe a 2F will have much of a difference in redline that the F. if you feel its screaming then gearing changes are likely needed. If you can do the work yourself in engine swap is good. If you dont mind paying someone a lot to do it an engine swap is good. If you dont want to do either than a rebuild is probably easiest. Do you think the block or head are damaged?

My rig is meant for adventure. If I need to go a long distance I will trailer it. I want a motor and transmission that will be good in the rocks and also be capable of faster speeds when running between trails and such. I’m thinking about putting ford f350 axles in it so it will quit shearing the pinion off. It has winches front and rear, two alternators, dual batteries, three separate fuel pumps on two tanks carrying 35 gallons total, air with a 9 gallon tank, power steering on superswampers😂. I’m not a mechanic but I f around

Do you want to keep it stock or are you also considering an upgrade beyond a 2F?

5.3 or 6.0?
I’m looking for the best option for a good trail rig. I’d like to be able to chug over obstacles rather than have to give it the onion to avoid stalling. The only thing stock on my rig is the engine but even that has some interesting stuff going on. I was kind of hoping that someone here could make a recommendation on a engine trans/ transfer case setup

Start with the budget. How much can you afford or want to spend at this point in time. Speaking of time - looking for a good deal will likely take a good bit of time vs find it/buy it now from new/remanufactured stocks and who is doing the work. Drop in replacements are simple enough - different engine, tranny, transfer, axles etc usually require more skills and tooling.

If I were to start with a clean slate, I'd probably look at something like sbc/LS(5.3), w/a 1st gen nv4500, a split case with a 3:1 gear set and stk axles with arb's and alloy birfs. 35-36" tires. I might consider FJ60 axles or something narrowed. Beyond that, would then look at a built dana 300 center rear output t/case and a centered rear diff. Nothing more than 60" wms. It really depends on how your gonna use it.

The block is fine needs cylinders and pistons. I had the head rebuilt but would definitely do the bottom end just to be safe.

My budget is pretty open. I can afford to do whatever I want to and will likely do the work myself with some assistance from friends. I was actually thinking about trying to import a diesel from South America but that would be as much as a new crate motor from summit

Not really a diesel guy but I did like my multi-fueler deuce and half M35A2 back in the 70's. One of my local snowplow guys had ford 250 with a 3 speed transfer case. I think it was a ranger unit. Made for 12 forward speeds, very handy for steep mountain driveways. My Suzuki 300 King Quad has 5 main gears with a 3 speed transfer case plus a differential lock - it can crawl fairly well.

At one time I was looking hard at the NV4500 and perhaps the Orion. I still want the 283 vet motor.

As it stands now, I doubt there is enough time left before stuff gets hard to find due to war rationing.

If is the main thing your looking for the F145 with a stock carburetor can do that. My 68 ran the best with a one barrel carburetor. Climbing hills in 4WD low range 400 RPM wouldn't stall and had enough torque to continue climbing.

What is the build date on your 69? Wouldn't mind finding a local engine to replace the 2F in my 10/69.

Just saying……

No kidding. Hide your sons the gods of war are drumming. I met a guy with a scout running a cat motor. Said the swap was around 30 and he is not a guy who owns a wrench.

I like my Cummins R2.8. If I were to do it again, I'd be interested in the Cummins B3.3. All mechanical injection. Also an industrial engine, so it will be tough

All of the quirks that I don't like about the R2.8 are computer related.

I think a 1FZ would be a good match as well.

Best/easy choice is the LS. But I just don't want to be that guy.

I bought a 5.3L LM7 from BD Turnkey engines and have been very happy with that motor (now going on 11 years). My current combo is:
5.3L LS / SM420 Trans / 3spd Tcase.

I'd like to go to a NV4500 or H55F / Splitcase for some more useable gears for highway and city driving (I live in San Diego) but this combo is a decent balance. If I was trying to keep it semi-original, I would get a COP motor from Mosely motors and mate it to a H55F

I’m not really sure the build date. I do know the engine is not original to this rig. I would be happy to find the engine info next time I visit the yard it’s stored in.
