so blew my old one at 270k buying a full crate engine ,a friend told me I should replace the computer.because it's a new motor ? Is it a good idea or unnecessary? If I do need one where should I look for one?

Call the dealer and ask if there is any recent update for the ECU, they need the VIN to verify. A reset will also do.

Where did you get crate engine and how much if you don't mind sharing.

2UZ-FE? Iron block, you can rebuild it as well.

Slap the new engine in and go, the ECU will remap to the new engine within a few hundred miles.

Can you get a pic of the old engine as well? I'd like to see what you mean by piston #8 blowing. Not sure if you're talking about throwing a piston through the side of the engine block or a hole in the piston itself, but either way I haven't seen either of those occur on a 2UZ-FE engine before.

He dropped a camera into the engine into #8 cylinder and saw a whole in the top of the piston he said there were some other things he couldn't make out but for the price the age and the mileage he didn't know what else he would run into ..

I'd really like more detail on this hole and and "some other things" Can you get pictures from him?

I assume your buying a long block, what they going for?

2UZs don't just fail. Ever. Sounds like something else occurred to cause the mechanical damage. Lack of coolant has and will kill a 2UZ.

Following this thread.

I keep thinking if I should save my engine from my parts rig but I may be dead before I need it.

Is that your 98 (parts rig)?

Sounds like it ingested something foreign and punched a hole in the piston. Did he look at the air filter?

Get a second opinion.

Could've gone lean in that cylinder.

Until I see a picture of the actual damage I'm going to say the mechanic was just plain wrong. It's possible to ruin a 2UZ piston, I'm sure... but it's extremely, extremely unlikely.

I've been lurking here a long time and participating more in recent years. I've NEVER seen a single thread with an actual blown 2UZ in a hundred series. I've seen dozens, threads that claim a blown engine only to later update and say "Got a second opinion, engine is 100% ok. Mechanic was just clueless and/or didn't want to investigate so quoted an entire new engine."

Get a second opinion or take a picture yourself or something. Borescope cameras are like $20 on amazon.

I'll Paypal somebody $10 if they can provide verifiable proof of their 2UZ suffering a real, complete-loss-enducing, catastrophic engine failure.

Seem I saw a burnt valve back a year or two here in mud, don't recall if they had a picture.
