I recently got the 2F engine into my parents garage to work on this fall and winter. It's out of a 1985 FJ60 and I'm wondering what's recommended to replace, update, and remove. I live in Vermont and hoping I can remove some of the smog / vacuum components but I'm not sure what's advised there. It's currently still mounted to the transmission and transfer case.

Any and all insights are welcomed.

In VT, nuke all of the smog as you don’t have inspections but I would confirm with VT DMV, I would go as far as doing a Sniper and ditching the carb. Was the engine running prior to removal? If so, what was the compression and leak down? Any other issues you want to address besides oil leaks etc? I’d ping JimC and have him rebuild the dizzy too while it’s out. That’s the big ticket items I can think of now.

I did have the vehicle running prior to pulling it but it never ran/idled smooth. Could have been caused by bad/old gas, sitting for a few years, etc. I never got to run the compression numbers either.

I remember you saying you did the electronic fuel injection switch, do you have a thread on that process? Wondering what is needed to make that happen.
 
You can do a compression check with it out like that. Pull all the spark plugs and jump the starter with another battery or a battery charger to spin the engine over.
