Hello,
I want to make a project:
I would want to mount the engine of jeep wrangler TJ 4l
in my toyota bj42 transmission h55f.
There is someone that has already made this job?
(adaptation h55f with engine jeep Tj) is possible?
I have need of informations for this project.
thanks.
Salvo

because I have the possibility to acquire this motor little price.
I do not know if it is possible to adapt the clutch of h55f in to plate jeep.

I have not ever seen an adapter to fit the Toyota H41/42 or 55 transmission up to a Jeep 4.0 engine.

I'm sure flaming will ensue but I will admit the thought has crossed my mind. If I were doing an engine swap I don't think I would go for the 4.0L before a GM V8, but in Italy I would think that GM V8's aren't extremely common. Both of my roommates have TJ's, both on 33's and they drive SO much better than my 2F. They can cruise down the freeway at 75 very comfortably and my POS tops out uncomfortably around 55 (4 speed, 3.73's, 35's. Speedometer is probably incorrect). So the basis for my thought was driveability. I would assume the 4.0L is quite a bit lighter as well. I know aboslutely nothing about the strength/weaknesses of either motors except the 2F will probably still be running 30 years from now with routine maintenance, so I don't have the ability to weigh the pros/cons of the motors themselves.

I'm with Southbostonfj... "Why" I think most on this forum would consider this sacreligious but I think I remember seeing a thread on here before where someone asked a similar question and if I recall the consensus was that it could be done but not a great option. try search.

Why not just run the engine, tranny and xfer of the Jeep? Or just engine tranny and adapt the xfer?

hell I dont't know... Why not just mount an FJ40 tub onto a Jeep chassis?

Hey, why not just buy a Jeep?

you know I'm kidding right?

In Peru we say " los carros no son culpables de los dueños que tienen" (spanish)

in english it is something like... "The cars do not belong culables of the owners they have"

I do not understand why people are dogging the 4.0 jeep engine. It has seven main bearings, opposed to the four in the Land Cruiser F/2F/3F variants, which makes the bottom end of the engine inherently stronger than the Toyota six.

As far as re-powering a vehicle with a different make engine; it occurs all the time, all over the world. To say someone does not deserve to own a specific vehicle based on what you think is correct is amazingly narrow-minded.

What is wrong with the 3B? You may have alot less problem simply trading you landcruiser for a jeep.

Since you are in Sicily... I say go ahead!! Can't you find a good used diesel? They are so much more available on your side of the ocean.

Whatever you do... please paint your cruiser Ferrari red, use Maseratti tail lamps, Ducatti turn signals and make sure you use "Rubicon" stickers on the hood. I believe it would be an impressive hybrid.

Good luck paisano!

x2?!?!?!

You've got the holy grail of 40's in my opinion. A 3B with an H55f. That's golden baby. If you want more power, put a turbo on it. If it's broken: fix it.

That's just what I'd do. In fact, I'm going one step further and putting a 3B/H55f into a US-spec FJ-40. That's how much I like the 3B/H55f combo.

I've had jeep's with the asian (AX-5)transmission and found them to be crappy at best, the ax-15 is better, don't even think about the poojo (frog tranny) that one was even worse than the ax-4 and 5. I'd try and stick with the diesel engine that you've got.
The amc jeep engines v8 and I6 were pretty good engines but I'd stray away from them as you will have a hard time finding a swap that won't involve having to replace the entire driveline to the transfer case. I know of no adapters other than using an AMC automatic turbo 400 and thats a maybe I'm not sure if Advance adapters turbo tranny adapter will work on an AMC turbo 400.

X1000 ! Listen to the man

x2 on the just run a jeep motor tranny and tcase (if you decide to do the swap that is)
and there was a guy who asked this same questing like 3 months ago... he was talked out of it...

i know that a jeep XJ (used to be a jeep guy so i know what im talking about here b4 i get started) XJ and ZJ WJ all use the same 4.0 as the TJ/YJ (the motors change slightly year from year but if you have a97 TJ and a 97 XJ ZJ the 4.0 will be the same) the tranny in the 5spd cherokees are also the same XJs and ZJ/WJs have different t-case options (grand cherokees dont come w/a straight shift)
the only reason i say any of this is b/c its possible to get a cherokee (or grand cherokee) for next to NOTHING a guy im in class w/bought a 93 Xj (runs good, looks ugly) for 500$
compare that to the price of a rebuild kit for a FJ/BJ motor and Jeep engines start to look VERY appealing VERY quickly.... even if you treat them like disposable razors, never change the oil and just drive them till they lock up, you will have less $$ invested (and once you do the swap once putting in another one would be a simple project) and well taken care of 4.0s can go over 200k miles w/o major issues

btw if you want to trade that diesel engine & trany i think i could swap that for a cherokee...
i know a fella...

The user never stated that they had a functioning, operational diesel engine in the BJ42.
