engine cleanup and under hood parts ID HELP?

On the very top of the engine (throttle body area, electrical connections, spark plug cover, etc..) skip the high pressure, just let the degreaser do its thing and rinse off. Any solid surfaces (side of the block, timing cover, etc can take high pressure, just be deliberate in your placement.

Also you won't get it 100% clean the first time through. After it dries you'll see what spots were missed and can tackle those next time.

thanks all,
looks like i’ll do a combo approach and put the extra large simple green jug to use.
putting my hands on stuff is not a bad way to try to figure out what is what. so hopefully folks don’t mind if i post back with questions?
THANKS

How about oven cleaner?

It can be a little aggressive for aluminum. I usually pretreat with Simple Green and let it soak. Seems to be more effective if motor is warm. I use high pressure car wash to finish it off after it sits for a while to soak. Throttle Position switch socket is the only connector I have had repeated water problems with. Back of dizzy has several vent holes so I cover it with a rag and dont use a lot of high pressure water directly on it.

Follow the circled piped to the other end, and you've located the PHH.

Looking at the rest of that Heater hose mess, my guess is no, its never been changed.
Why were all those hoses blocked/cut, You might want to check the rear heater hoses/pipes before you address the top side.
You can find the rear pipes and hoses under the heat shields between the catalytic converters and the passenger floor.
Happy hunting!

Oh and don't let Simple Green or Purple Power sit on aluminum, its corrosive to that metal.
Make sure you get it all rinsed off.
Simple Green makes an Aircraft grade that is much more gentle on Al.

As for what I would feel safe about spraying with a pressure washer under the hood:

ABSOLUTELY NOTHING! That's just begging for a disaster.

/thanks/.

air filter canister is the big one in the middle?

also, i priced the heater control valve. retail is like $70. but i couldn’t find the diagram for the part so i can’t tell what other hoses i need. it’s not under HVAC > heater. maybe i should check in the FSM and see if i can at least see a diagram?

any way i can ask you what picture i need to take to see if the PHH was done? i am kind of assuming the heater control valve will be a piece of cake if the PHH was done but i am “wrench bootstrapping” myself from a motorcycle here so i’m trying to allocate my skills properly...

THANK YOU

jon

i got a replacement heater valve from my local autozone, and it was pretty reasonable. i bet rockauto has them for pretty cheap.
going Non-OEM for this component is probably ok if it means you can have heat for the winter ;)

hi guys,
i’m chunking though cooling system overhaul threads right now.
i will look but the PHH was supposed to have been done about 6K ago. but i will look.
can i just ask this? assuming the PHH was done how difficult is the repair i am looking at for the hoses and the heater control valve? i mean, i am reading up on things and it looks like folks do a lot of other work when they do the PHH but if i /don’t/ need to do the PHH can i get by by just doing the hoses and the valve?
also. what does this repair require in terms of the radiator and radiator fluid? do i need to drain and fill or just top off?
can i mess anything up or is this a “one banana” repair...?
THANKS
jon

You can replace the PHH and heater hoses on the firewall without draining the radiator, just be prepared to have coolant loss when you replace hoses. I can't remember how much came out but probably a few quarts at most.

Jack stand the driver side front and remove wheel. Pry off the plastic spray skirts on the wheel well. Get some good light up in there and you should be able to locate the PHH, its a 3 inch section of heater hose connecting into the block from the metal coolant hose that runs up to the heater valve area. See what the clamps look like on it, if the hose is not visibly old. Its best to just replace it if you're in there (and you're doing the heater hoses on firewall anyway).

The heater hoses are simple. Stare at yours or pictures of others (theres tons posted) and it will be obvious to you. To do PHH and all the heater hose on firewall plus the heater valve (you need that), will take you 3 hours Im guessing since its your first time. Second time you could do it all in an hour. Good luck.

The heater control valve takes maybe 30 minutes if I recall, little to no coolant loss in the process

welcome...

no amount of asking will replace getting your eyes and hands on the hoses. Spend 30 minutes poking around, youll figure stuff out quickly!

hi all.

reading up here. waiting on a FSM (have the digital copy). going to try to dive into some downloads from the techinfo.toyota.com page for a couple of error codes i need to track down.

anyone able and/or willing to help me with some under hood parts ID’s (i cleaned up the thread title to better reflect this need). basically any help i can get with the learning curve would be great! i realize this takes up a lot of bandwidth and is super boring for s lot of people but i would find it super helpful. also i ams sure there is some additional info or pics i didn’t take.
they are sort or organized but mostly in the order i took them.
next i am going to try to get up and under to clean up the underside.
THANKS,
jon
