Hey everyone
I posted once looking for places to find parts and derped it up pretty good. So i will try this again.
I am looking for some advice. The engine I have in my truck lived under water for a little bit in the Calgary floods. Looking in the oil fill hole and card it looks pretty clean. I am going to pull the valve cover off and drop the oil pan. Looking for contamination.
Now how much power do these engine put out. I am on 35s right now. Is this engine worth messing with or should i just go head down and put the v8 in now. I do want to be be on 40s in a couple years.
Thank you

the power from a 2F or F is not great, but it works great for DD or weekend wheeling. I run 36 swampers and a 2F with the stock 4.11 gears. Works fine for my driving and wheeling.

It would help to know what you have now and what you are planning to do with it. Hard core wheeling, DD, etc.? You said 40s, so I would think at some point you might want more than the 2F or F will provide, but that is just a guess.

My 2f and 4.11s move 37s just fine. Definitely not going anywhere fast tho.

Gearing can allow you to push 40s, just depends on your plans while driving and wheeling.

The F will have some difficulties with the 40" tires IMHO

Why the 40" ? Just for driving around town ... Or are you going to wheel it? I think wheeling you'll notice the F being underpowered with fat 40" tires on

I am envisioning a turtle on stilts :)

Seems a turtle on stilts is a confidence builder...

I run 35's with the 2F and it does OK. I can run 70mph on the highway but 75mph is all she's got. 65mph is pretty much it for comfortable driving speed.

If I were to do it again, instead of working over the 2F, I would go with a standard 350 and build it to around 250 - 275hp with a torque cam. It would be cheaper and a hell of a lot easier to find parts. I hate to put GM parts on a Toyota but would still go that route.

I am going hard core with this rig. In my mind i am stating with a cool tub, frame and vin number. I just had a friend of a friend call me with a 4.3 (a 350 that is missing 2 pistons) for please bring beer. I am thinking this an good option for now. To get me running and driving. I will put the other F engines up for sale and keep building.

I like the 4.3, but IMO, it's not a good motor for an fj40. It's all the work and cost of a 350, with only 3/4 of the power. F engines don't sell. You probably won't even get beer for them.

Go get the 4.3, sell it and buy a 350.

The 2F/SBC argument aside, I am a fan of the SBC350/5.7, either TBI or TPI. Plenty of power, smooth response, relatively fuel efficient, plenty of parts available, affordable and reliable.

Why 40s? 37s seem to be the largest most run on stock drivetrain.

For 40s, I'd ditch the stock drivetrain... Not adapt to it and then replace it when the stock components can't handle the switch from 29" ------> 40" tires.

Sm 465/420 is the route many go... Or Auto.

Right now it is on 35s, and 38 pitbulls will fit witch are like running a 40 for wight and abuse to the drive train. Right now it is get it running and moving under its own power. Then each year go after somthing biger on it. In the end it will be on D60s 3 link fromt 4 link rear with a v8 in it. Tire sive is not the main thing. I just want it beefy but not over kill. With my jeep i was always braking untill i built with 35s in mind and then ran 33 with no issues drive line wise.
