I am trying to get the head lights to work on my 74 FJ 40 I have running lights but no turn signals, and no head lights, all fuses are ok, horn works, is there a location to look for a ground or a connection under the hood. Thanks

It is probably ground related. You can directly ground the white/black stripe wire to a known ground and see if it it causes your headlight to illuminate. When you say the fuses are okay, be sure to check the blade holder, not just the fuse itself, since they often corrode, especially in a soft or open top truck, and won't carry electricity, even though the fuse itself shows good. Touch the clip behind the fuse to make sure the transfer is carried through it as well. If not, disconnect the battery, remove all fuses, and use a round file to file the fuse holders. There is no central single ground location, but any white wire with black stripe is a ground wire.

I second the fuse block problem. This just happened to my 40 yesterday. Fuse had power at both ends but the retaining clip did not. Do what Texx said and it should fix the problem.

I'll 3rd the fuse block. Take the headlight fuse out clean the fuse holder and fuse, then put it back in.

My headlight switch has been known to cause me this issue.

Thanks For the hint I cleaned the contacts, and still nothing, but If I wiggle the head light switch then the park lights come on and if you wig the switch then they go off, but no life in the headlights, so is it safe to bet the headlight switch is bad?
Thanks

There is no sign of life when I use the high beam, I have 2 other FJ 40s that I can rob parts off, I will try the switch, I used a test lamp on the connections under the hood and under the dash and have no power, only at the fuse block is power, I also noticed the hazard function is not working, but I have rear lights, horn, even the light above the rear plate is working. and the lights in the gauge cluster is working. Thanks again

I just fixed the exact same problem you have. Unplug the harnesses going up the steering column, or, take the plastic steering column cover off and check for power at the contacts there. Work the hi-lo beam lever and you'll see the tiny contacts in there. They are really small and as stated about fuse holders, it only takes a little corrosion to break the circuit. I cleaned the contacts with some fine (320) grit sand paper and they all started working. That's for the headlights. Turn signals may have a corroded connection in the steering column also.
