Ok, I have not found much with dyno results (yes I did search), so figure it is time to start a thread. Perhaps not your normal item on the list for the Cruiser crowd.

Basically I am helping Baktash and EMS Powered with the R&D efforts for their upgraded FZJ80 exhaust system. As part of the Beta testing, a pre-install and post-install dyno was the best way to see what real gains the system might provide.
Several folks are taking part, and my rig is one which has the TRD supercharger, so a good baseline could be found for similar rigs.

Luckily there is a great all-wheel-drive dyno within a 30 minute drive from my place, and they arranged for a good price for two separate visits.

So, off I went today for my pre-test. Here are a few observations, comments, pictures, and of course video. Enjoy. :cheers:

• Location = 034 Motorsports, Fremont, CA
• Altitude = 56' above sea level
• Date = 09/09/09
• Time = 18:11
• Temp = Appx. 75 degrees F
• Humidity = Moderate
• Fuel = 91 Octane pump gas – Union 76
• Tire PSI 48 = rear, 46 front
• Strapped down at the axles front and rear
• Runs all done in 2nd gear with 2nd gear start button engaged – necessary to keep the trans from downshifting
• 2000 – 5000 rpm was the designated run-range
• Peak HP = 168.8hp @ 4500 rpm - at the wheels
• Peak Torque = 212 ft-lb @ 3250 rpm - at the wheels

Observations:

• Dropping boost between 3000 and 4000 rpm, then rising again
• Serious change in AFR starting @ 4000 rpm, very rich
• Maximum boost = 6psi
• The three runs were very consistent, with minimal variation

All in all I am pretty happy with the results, as the drivetrain and oversize tires, etc are eating quite a bit of power and this dyno is known to be very-very conservative in the ratings. Looking forward to the post-exhaust installation. Once that is done, will be looking to sort out the AFR issues.

Definitely the trip to the dyno is not for anyone who has concerns with the health of their vehicle. With the stress, I am sure that some rigs would definitely have problems…it is not normal duty cycle to be flogged at WOT to redline for these rigs.

So those hp and torque numbers are with the supercharger right?

Thanks for sharing. Do you know what the advertised crank HP/TQ numbers are for the blower at 6 psi?

I regularly flog the crap out of my rig--pushing 4200-4600 rpm for sustained time periods--mainly going up passes and other "troublesome" terrain where the 1FZ just falters with stock gears and big tires.

I did the Eisenhower Pass in Colorado pushing 4500 rpms for almost 8 minutes keeping a sustained speed of almost 67 mph (normally aspirated).

I did that same run at 3200rpms at a whopping 20 to 25 MPH , while helping kill all the bugs alone Rt 70 with the nice sooty diesel cloud pouring from my "90hp of Fury" 3B tuned for sea level :grinpimp:
I did see 60+ mph , on the way down the other side :rolleyes:
 
Looking at those numbers at the wheels make you almost want to save for pistons and rods. 6psi IMO just isnt doing it. But 6psi is better than stock, i guess.

What are the different colored squiggly lines, and the associated numbers (difficult to see)?

Wut? Does that mean I should stop using the rev limiter as a audiable shift light?!? (Anybody who has wheeled with me know that I'm not kidding... Especially when I was on those :censor: Toyos!)
 
Is the Green / Yellow line on the bottom the boost?

I stand corrected. The brown/green line at the bottom is boost. Black line in the middle is AFR's. Blue is torque. Red is HP.

Looks like the dyno they're using is a Land and Sea "Pro" 1000 AWD Chassis Dyno. I'm not familiar with that particular dyno and how much lower/higher it will read than other chassis dyno's. But since Steve will be doing the post dyno at the same location, it will give us good back-to-back results to compare percentage gains. Typically you will see anywhere from 5%-30% difference in actual HP/TQ figures from one brand of dyno to another

Hi Christo,

Yes boost is yellow/green.

Blue = Torque

Red = Horsepower

Black = Air Fuel Ratio

The line tapped for vac/boost was the one to the FPR.

Factory without S/C = 212hp @ 4600 and 275 ft-lb @ 3200 at the crank.

TRD S/C @ 6psi = ?? Nothing on their site...perhaps CDan may have some answers.

Based on my experience with Eaton S/C's, likely there is a gain in the neighborhood of 75 to 90hp at the crank. As said, I am more interested on the gains from the exhaust upgrade at this point.

:p WOT is not my normal mode of driving the cruiser...just every once in a while when bursting onto the freeway, or perhaps dropping someone who expects the cruiser to be a dog. It has a rev limiter?

Used to my SC Audi banging against that wall in first and second gear. :bang: One reason why I have a Valentine 1.
 
For those wondering about the descending black squiggly line...watch the video closely for the soot. Essentially the ECM is enrichening the mixture. The soot is a great visual, and definitely lets you know when the truck is above 4000 rpm, and dumping fuel...better to be rich than lean. ;p

Great thread, and goes over the pre-vs-post comparisons quite well. The item to note from dyno-to-dyno with similar vehicles is how close the curves match. Between Hzavarce's chart, Christo's SC chart and mine, the curves are very similar, with most differences IMO being due to the different dyno's bias and local conditions.
