Hi Folks.

As I continue to use my rig, I find we spend lots of time at the back with the tailgate down. Either I'm pulling stuff from the drawers, using trekboxx pull out, grabbing drinks from the fridge, or just hanging out...and it great! My only complaint is exhaust. If the vehicle is running (usually to keep the girls warm hanging out on the tailgate) the exhaust can be overwhelming. It's got me thinking about the possibility of deleting the resonator and moving the exhaust out the side if possible. Is this a terrible idea?

I don’t think it’s a terrible idea. It has the additional benefit of increasing your ground clearance under where the resonator was. Although if you are crawling on trails where that additional clearance helps, you probably wouldn’t want it right behind the tire, since you may crush it in the new location as you come off of a rock.

If neither of those things are a concern, then I would still be worried that the new location wasn’t far enough away to eliminate the fumes. Some days it may work a little better and others it may be the same depending on the breeze.

Have you considered a Mr Buddy Flex heater or something similar?

Thanks. Great input. I've considered a small heater, but there really isn't a good spot, and it's just one more thing to haul around, get out, and keep fuel for. Engine running also has the added benefit of keeping everything fully charged. I may just end up with a small length of high temp flex hose that I can slide on if we are going to be hanging out for any extended period. That's actually starting to sound like the most sane option.

When I did a full custom exhaust on my FJ-62 to deal with the higher manifold placement due to the 2FE I did a side dump with a slash cut tip because I would hit the pipe out the back from time to time. Worked great. I was worried about exhaust maybe coming back in but it wasn't an issue. I never got into a place where dropping off a rock was an issue though because, well, 60/62 quarter damage is body work not a plastic shell.

Haven’t shelfed it yet.

I don’t notice it , so I guess pretty good !??
I did notice after the resonator cut and before I got around to the repointing, that put exhaust smell everywhere diffusely.

I’m watching this thread. Hitching up and unhitching is a utter choking paint in the butt with rear exhaust. I hadn’t considered the cons of the tailpipe being crushed when wheeling over a rock or obstacle.

If you aren't aware of how hot the pipe is, take care if you put a flexible pipe over it temporarily or permanently move it elsewhere. There are heat shields over some of the pipe for a reason and storing a hot, stinky flexible pipe after use might be tricky.
