The toybox works with a split tcase..

or were you saying something else?

I never know that your 78 have an auto tranny Wayne .. and it run fine with 36" tractor tires on road .? ( 4.88 R&P ? )

It works with a split case, but not with the A440. They list the TH350, TH400 and 700R4. Don't have the A440 application. Dunno why. Sent them an email.

that is what I don't understnad.. If an a440 looks the same as a 4 speed (or 5 speed) on the back why won't it work??

I am betting there are lots of options out there. Nobody has asked yet ;)

Just got our answer. It's the fact that the Toybox uses gear oil, the transmission uses ATF. It's the seal of the ATF. When you bolt a Toybox to a 4spd it shares oil.

From the website "Also, the ToyBox shares its oil with the transmission prolonging both the transmission and the ToyBox's life with cooler oil operating temperatures."

Here's the conversation I had with Marlin's folks:

I have an 89 FJ62 with a stock drive train. A440F to stock split t-case.

Can I use a toybox in my truck? I seem to think I can't but I'm not exactly sure why. Can you explain why it doesn't work, if it doesn't.

Thanks much,

Yes and no. We have the adapter done but are still in the r&d stage. We are trying to find a better way to seal the atf from the gear drive t-case. We had problems on the first tacoma crawlers and don't want to go down that road agian. I don't have a eta yet but it will be on are web sight as soon as it is ready. Thanks

Thanks for the info. Can I publish this info to the ih8mud forum?

Sounds ok. I talked to Dave about it and he said it would be fine. When it is ready for release I get ahold of you. Thanks

Thanks for getting in touch with marlin greg, i wish some would just make a 203 adapter or something like that, the toybox is great but id like to be able to do it for cheap. At least something is in the works.

Cool, a 203 has a seperate input seal on the 203 because it was bolted to a manual or an auto.... So I would assume it would work then correct?

How about an adaptor to mate a gm auto tranny to the 3fe? It seems logical to me with the expense of rebuilding a 440F that slapping a GM tranny in with the doubler already available. Thoughts?

What needs to be replaced in order for the output of a 4 or 5 speed to accept/mate with the 203 input? Is the spline count/size of the auto output shaft the same as a manual? I'm assuming it has to be if both an auto and a manual bolt to the same split case. Who sells yota to 203 adapters?

I have my old PTO gear from when I installed the McNamera. I'll find it tomorrow and count the splines. Lets figgure this out Matt. Thanks for the help Mace.

Advanced makes the adapter plate.

You can talk to Mudrak about it I know he sels the adapters. I believe it is something like classic cruisers in Colorado that were the originators of the adapter. But I think AA produces it for them..

Bingo..

Colorado Off Road Express.
Jerry Nichols (719) 576-0616

Mudrak sells them and AA makes then for Jerry..

They work with either the 4 speed or 5 speed tranny and the stock tcase.

I would hit up Mudrak for the info tho.. He is who I got my 203 adapter from and is an all around great guy..

I'm dying to see you guys make this work. I remember AA's website saying something about them making an adapter for Colorado Offroad Xpress that could be used to mate a toyota 4 or 5 speed manual tranny to the 203. Keep us posted.

Or whether or not the 19 spline mainshaft for the 203 is the right length to accept the auto output properly. It would be sweet if it were long enough to catch the unworn part of the auto output, i know ive got a decent amount of wear on mine. I guess that it would have to work, since you can bolt the same tcase to all cruiser trannys i guess the outputs have to terminate that the same point beyond the flange on the back of the tranny.

I followed a couple of threads on this problem, one from a guy swapping a 1uz into his 4runner and mating the auto to a Marlin split case set up. Seems like a tough problem. Still, if they can get this right it would be a great option. Or the 203. Frankly I'd be happy just to have one dual case option for my A440 :)

The oil seal in the 203 is the front bearing retainer. It also centers the input shaft..

Lets see if I can link this pic..

with the output style there are only 2 ways for the adapter to work.
1. A new output shaft to mimic the 203 input
2. A new input gear (like Marlin does with his adapters) for the 203.

If #1 is the truth, then I can see the issues, but if it works for both the 4 speed and the 5 speed the output shafts would have to be different.

If #2 is correct, you probably have to trim the output shaft down..

Here is a link from mudrak's website as to how the adapter works. Looks like option #2 in your list mace. Why would you have to trim the output down (forgive if thats a dumb question, i dont pretend to be experienced with the internals of yota drivelines.)
