My God that is a huge pic!!!

;)

The stock output is Looooooooonnnnnnnnggggggg. And, would go all the way through the 203 if not trimmed down. If you look at the diagram you will se that the mainshaft of the 203 is 2 pieces. A single main shaft would not work as a gear reduction box. So you trim it to a couple of inches (the length of the stock outputs that were used with the 203.

BTW, I want to say this conversion is around 1K for all the adapters.
203's are about $0.50 each tho ;)

Heck, I gave sixty a fairly rare one :)

BTW, that sure looks like it uses the stock bearing retainer.. Which uses 2 input seals back to back...

How about an adaptor to mate a gm auto tranny to the 3fe? It seems logical to me with the expense of rebuilding a 440F that slapping a GM tranny in with the doubler already available. Thoughts?

Someone did an adapter but I'll be darned if I can remember the shop that did it. Before I had my A440 rebuilt I considered this. I do remember that the last time I heard about someone looking into it they pinged the shop and never got a response. If I can remember the name I'll post it up...

Downey did make one adapter.. But it never made it into production.

I believe it was over the hill that also made an adapter. But they stopped selling it.

Alright folks, hold on to your seats!

It can be done!

I talked to Mudrack, he thought it would work. He recomended that if the transmission seal wouldn't seal perfectly you could just run ATF in the t-case. I'm not sure about that idea. He also said to call Mr Nichols.

Here's my notes from the conversation with Mr. Nichols:

You will need to cut off the tail shaft of the transmission. Measure the depth of the adapter, and input of the 203. Tape the tail shaft off, score it with a grinder, then saw with hacksaw. Clean it up with a dremel. Test fit the adapter and 203 using that gear marking crap (my words) and make sure it works.

The kit comes with a locking collar to put on tailshaft to keep the shaft from thrusting back and forth.

The front adaptor plate and new 19 spline input gear (and bearing) should provide preasure on the transmission seal just like the split case does from the factory and should seal off. This all bolts to back of transmission, the the 203 to the front adapter. Mr Nichols confirmed that the front adapter will match up to the a440f just fine. He has tested that. He hasn't tested the depth to cut the tailshaft, but that should be pretty easy to figgure.

Rear adapter 19 spline output goes into the split case.

203 info he gave me:
You just use the front section (h-l-n) of hte case. The center chain drive section that drives the front axle gets left out. The
rear of the case is a differential that allows for full time 4WD and was the problem in these cases. That gets left out. Gets rid of a bunch of weight.

He recommended test fitting everything really well but thought it was do-able.

Next for me to learn about is how to find a 203, and what kind of gearing it will give me in the end. :bounce:

Finding a 203.. Piece of cake. They are EVERYWHERE!!! Litterally..

You want either a Dodge or a chevy one. The ford unit has a different front bolt pattern.

Most 70's 4x4 chevies had them..
And if you pay more than $50 to $100 for one (or free) you are getting ripped off.
If you buy one from someone that is shipping, don't let them send you the entire thing. The back half weighs a TON. Litterally..

Gear ratio is 2:1 so take your curent crawl ratio and multiply it by 2.

The 203 is a VERY easy shifting tcase. Getting it in and out of low should not be a problem..

imagine how nice it would be being twice as low as before ;)

Yep 1:1 no difference in top end (a bit more slop possibly in the drivetrain cause of the extra gears tho, not a big deal at all)

Whole 203

Part you want..

And hooked up to the split tcase

Good stuff.

Alright, who's first? Step right up a440 boys!

Mudrack says around $550 for the adapter stuff.
Plus $100 for the case.
$100 shop suplies, seals and such
$750 for a doubler!

The one I'm thinking of wasn't by Downey or W but I still can't think of the shop so I guess it doesn't matter. I'm sure W could make one if you wanted it done though - they've always got cool projects going on. My truck is there right now for an 3FE rebuild - I can't wait to get it back after they get done working it over :)

up n over then...

Pretty sure it was them.. I get OTH and UNO confused. It was not W.

I hope you are right, but I think that was just for the 203/4 speed adapter. The 203/split tcase was an additiona $500.

hope I am wrong..

Up and Over, that's who I was thinking of. Thanks, that was going to drive me crazy :)

Sure would be cool.

On my list before this project: Body lift (next few weeks), wheels, 35's, winch (customize my non TJM to fit), probably a rear bumper.

After all that then maybe Marks gears underdrive to gear back down to stock with the 35's on there. While I'm there I might as well throw in a doubler! a year, maybe?

I have an email in to Mudrak to clear up the pricing question above.

very cool. nice research

its nice to have options. hopefully in the next 5 years i will do this

ummm, if it sounds too good to be true it usually is...
you sure that is everything i will need to install the doubler?!?!?
crap, i love the idea. so longer front DS, sorten the rear. longer speedo cable, the above parts...i am sure there MUST be something missing...

thanks for all the info...

You will need to figure out shifters... Driveshaft mods, etc...

I pulled some measurements last night. Looks like shifters would be pretty easy. My thinking was to get another stock shifter and put it 10" behind the origional one. Front one for the doubler, back one for the split case. It is simplified for 62's than other applications since the shifter only has to pivot back and forth for both shifters. H-L on both cases.

A body lift will make it even simpler... :grinpimp:

I just keep in the ecuation the crossmember issue ( in my case lifted need to be modified ) to get angle for your front drive shaft.
