DT Headers Installed and Tested

My DT headers were installed by a local shop this week. All estimates were for 13 hours labor, so I went with the guys down the road who work at $60 per hour. As expected, they took the steering linkage off; unexpectedly, they lifted up the engine. So far, so good, everything put back together and seems as it was...

...except for the performance! I had to tow my 6000 lb boat over the mountain today. This is a 1300' climb in less than 2 miles. I am happy to say there was a very noticeable increase in performance over 3K rpm. Whereas in the past a downshift to 2nd above 3K kept us moving and always ended up being disappointing at 4K, which led to upshifting again to stay in the power, now the downshift accelerated us and kept accelerating well past the speed I wanted to go. Completely different experience at 4K...just kept wanting to give more power.

This is GREAT! Can't wait to see if I can maintain 70 mph while pulling my motorcycle trailer in OD. I think the headers not only fixed my leak, but may have also made up for the -285s and broadened the available power up around 4K rpm.

Thanks to all who worked to put together these group buys and - repeating myself here - thanks to all who participate on this site. I have really enjoyed being associated with you over the past 7 years and have enjoyed all the money I've saved doing a lot of this work myself!

Hi, is this smog compliance for California? I hate dealing with smog certification in Cali, had header and air intake at one time in my other vehicles and when it came to smog, it was a PITA.

I answered my own question, yes DT Header is smog legal in Cali... woohoo will call DT tomorrow!!!!

Its a pretty PITA install. Very hard to reach bolts, nuts/studs can break and/or strip, etc.
You also want to go ahead and get replacement gaskets. I replaced all the engine studs with new OEM ones as well.
If someone asked me to install them on their 100, i'd probably charge them about 300 bucks or so. Part of the high price would be to persuade them to get someone else to do it

Driver side took about 4-5 hours and definitely needed the help of a friend with getting wrenches on bolts a few times. Had to unbolt the engine on the DS and hoist it up about 2inches to gain room. Passenger side was a breeze and took less than 2 hours.

The folks at ACC here in Atlanta have said it likely is a 7 hour install at $100 hr. Could take less (or even more) time though so they are being cautious and adding in extra so as not to have unexpected surprises. As always southern truck vs. rust belt ride and how many bolts break are a determining factor. Not cheap but a very fair price to pay to know it's done right and by people that know the 4.7.

I paid $650 to have my Toyota dealer do the install. They mentioned that they did replace several studs in the process and it took the mechanic a good part of the day to get it done.

That sounds very reasonable for a dealership - was it for labor and parts (studs)?

I just had mine installed by a local shop and it took them about 10 hours and cost $725. Not cheap by any means, but the resulting performance gain AND no more ticking manifolds make this a no brainer! I also bought all new OEM nuts, bolts, studs, and gaskets to the tune of $170. I figure I might as well spend a little extra and use top quality parts. So far so good!

I have yet to see/hear it and I wonder if this is another 2000+ issue with Mr. T parts???

Mine is a 2001 Jason, so i cant prove/disprove the theory, but come over to Tyler and visit your old rear Tupperware bumper and you can hear it. I have all the parts in the garage, just haven't tackled the job yet.

I have a 99 with 170K+ miles and I have not had any ticking noises. My brother in law has the 2000 and I can hear it ticking a little. So I know what I am supposed to listen for, and always try to hear a ticking in mine, but can't. So my 99 is good.
My sisters 98 had 235K and she never had any header issues (no ticking).

I'm not sure if you are trying to talk yourself into or out of headers but the ticking issue isn't the only reason to get them. They do improve the drivability of the LC tremendously.

The ticking can happen at anytime or never. Most often it's when the motor is cold. The ticking is caused by a pin hole in the manifold the is collapsed after the manifold heats up and expands. In severe cases it ticks all the time. So you may have it and just not noticed since it goes away after a minute of warm up.

There are a couple of owners with superchargers and DT headers. The headers only improve the blown motor.

The ticking in my 2002 LC was at its worst right after startup. After a few minutes of driving, it went away but you know it's still there. Not only an annoyance, but if left alone and it gets worse, I was told exhaust fumes might get into the cabin of the car. That alone may or may not be reason enough to act, but add it all up and it was well worth it. Replacing the OEM manifolds at the Toyota dealership would have cost $2610. Go the DT aftermarket route and you'll save $1000 AND gain some performance.

Yes, I'm running the TRD S/C and the DT Headers. I put them both on at the same time, so I cannot tell you how much each separate install contributed to the ooohyaaa I feel when I get on it now, but, the truck feels like it is about 500 lbs lighter and definitely don't need to regear to be happy with the 285's.

I just put the DT Catback system on, can't tell if it has noticeably more power than what I already had from the DT headers and TRD SC, but it sure sound a lot more like a V8 now. I expect mpg to go down, because it is difficult to not get it up to 3500 rpm in first and second gear just to hear the mellow roar.
