I emailed about buying either just the cat back system and the headers together. I still haven't recieved a reply. Being in Afganistan makes it a little hard to call...

Alright guys, you requested it so here's a brief sound clip of the DT Cat-back for the 100 series. Last night I had a chance to link up with Arotrhd and take his cruiser for a test drive. Definitely one cool mudder and much thanks to him for stopping by to show off his DT cat-back prototype.

Unfortunately, I didn't have any better recording equipment than my old iphone (not even a newer one) and I stuck it a little too close to the exhaust initially so apologies for that.

The sound:

I do believe that the clip makes it sound a little obnoxious compared to how it actually sounds in person. The general consensus seems to be that most people would like a little bit throatier exhaust note but one that doesn't scream "I need attention" and I think it delivers on that front. It does sound like a V8 now for sure and I would imagine that is primarily a result of a lack of a resonator. If someone wanted one, I'm sure it wouldn't be difficult to fit one, but there is definitely a gratifying amount of audible feedback when you stomp the pedal that just makes driving the land cruiser a little less boring.

We hopped on the freeway and drove a fair distance. It was difficult for me to discern drone from road noise. The Beastie has some pretty aggressive 35" mud tires (like KM-2's but something else I can't recall) that aren't quiet by any means. It was a louder ride than I am used to in my cruiser and although I think most of that is attributed to the tires, some might say there was a drone. Either way, I didn't find the noise to be excessive or unexpectedly loud.

The performance:

I had to thoroughly calibrate my seat-o-the-pants meter by taking the following into account about both of our trucks:

My cruiser:

DT Headers only
Oiled TRD drop-in air filter
33" BFG ATs
ARB Deluxe bar w/winch
No rear steel
No sliders
No roof rack
stock gearing

AROTRHD's cruiser:

Headers & Exhaust
standard paper filter
35" mud tires
Slee front w/winch
Slee rear w/hi-lift
Roof rack
Sliders
stock gearing also
more gear in the back
and probably many more weight consuming mods that I'm not aware of

With all of this extra weight in mind as well as torque lost through his larger tires, I really wasn't expecting to feel any difference in power. If anything I thought my truck might feel a little bit more nimble. Not so. Even going from 0-15 mph I could feel a difference right away. Again this is all perception based dyno, but I noticed an increase in torque on the lower end probably from around 1500 to 3000 over my own rig's power band. I don't think I would venture to say that it is a 50hp gain or anything, but I do agree with Arotrhd's sentiment that combined with the headers, performance gains go from almost imperceptible to fundamental. The pedal feedback is more responsive and there is just plain more power. I'd be very interest to see if RobRed's dyno proves my suspicions correct.

At any rate, I was pleased with both the improvements sound and the driveability factor offered by the cat-back considering the price. If you want an extra 120hp you can go drop $8,000 on a turbo kit, but for $450 any perceptible gain that doesn't compromise fuel economy is worth it in my book.

Very nice. Thanks for the detailed input. Now if we can get these delivered we'll be a happy bunch.

....Going to work on getting some more clips available with exterior & interior shots w/ tach capture at various speeds & conditions in the next couple of days & post. We weren't able to do too much as I met with mechanixhorseman in the evening and drive time was needed. I'm really glad there is an independent assessment that is now available.

Anybody else in the Socal area care to meet, I'll do my best to make something happen.

Gotta agree, I think we're all cool mudders...'specially those who keep the Fort safe and free from the baddies of the world.

have these shipped yet...scrunched up my muffler this weekend in Uwharrie on trails....and contemplating just putting on a custom cat back using magnaflow low profile model and having it tucked up custom......or ordering either the Dough Thorley's or the EMS cat back setups depending on shipping dates and prices.

I like the EMS better. However I still give props to DT for taking a leap of faith and making the impossible possible with the headers. They would get y Bussiness again, but the EMS just looks awesome.

yes the EMS is a great looking setup as well...and they have a special on it now as well.

If not doing a new drive shaft setup...would get one...but as it is will just get magnaflow 18" and new 2.5" pipe coming out...tucked up tight inside frame rails. :)

Somebody got dazzled by the shiny objects ;)

I don't really see the difference the shiny finish will make, being on the underside and all. I'll be interested to see how the side by side dyno's stack up. If no one rogers up for their free exhaust proposal by dec, I'll offer my cruiser as a base line for comparison.

I emailed Nick today.

Nick-
I was just wanting to inquire about the 100 series exhaust status. How are you looking on lead time and shipping on this.

I agree that the EMS looks marginally better i.e. clamps, however I have personal objections to companies who go on forums saying why their product is better than another companies product and referring to that company by name.

I have no objection with a company saying they are "better than the competition and here is why"

Say what you are selling and why it's a good product (even why you feel it's the best product) and let the forum and end-users decide what is actually better.

I don't have the same objections. I canceled my DH order and ordered EMS instead. I wanted more flow for my SC. Nick did say today that the DH cat backs start shipping tomorrow.

What makes people think that one will flow better than the other? Aren't they the same basic design, but different hardware?

The larger diameter of the pipes allow for higher flow. This means the engine can push more air out, and with the proper intake breathe in more. Netting you more power over a smaller diameter system such as stock, borla, and DT.

I dunno, is the $400 (normal price) difference going to be worth it? The Dynos will tell:meh:

I would like to a see a dyno of both products.

However, i'd rather it be a third party do this rather than EMS giving the reviewer/owner a free exhaust system to replace their DT. I am assuming EMS is also paying for the dyno runs?

So then why not go to 5" pipes? :D
Transitioning from 2.0" pipe directly into 2.5" pipe, while doing nothing else to the engine, does not necessarily translate to more HP/TQ
