I know the front spring is suppose to be behind the shoes and the back spring in front but why? I have not seen this on other cars with drum brakes. Just curious.

Best answer so far: Because that is how they came from the factory. This was from a parts supplier.
 
If you put them same side it rolls the shoes and wears along one edge and adjustment is difficult cause they are not flat on drum.
 
Year is necessary to know
 
Don’t remember the changeover date, but if your pads have the retaining clips in the middle of each pad, then spring orientation looks like this…

I have the top schematic. Mine does not have the retaining clips and I didn’t have the bottom schematic. That clears up how it should be and now to finish up the rebuild of the brake system
