Has anyone done this beyond for emergency reasons (limp home). I'm just not happy with the continuing grindy sound from the front end and before I drive 1000 miles to Cruise Moab (assuming I don't get it dialled in prior), I'm considering just dropping the front shaft, locking the center diff with my CDL switch, and getting there like that to avoid 1000 miles of abuse to the u-joints, diff, tcase etc at highway speeds.

We replaced all the u-joints with OEMs. Next is balance the shafts (tomorrow). if that doesn;t work...drop the shaft?

You should be fine. I drove around for several months with only the rear shaft in.

Ammo had to do it after a trail run once. Should have no problem, just lock the center diff.

my 93 handled a little wierd with the front shaft dropped, but nothing major. No reason it won't work.
The bigger issue is will it help you? You will still be turning the birfs, axles, and diff. Just not under power. I wouldn't want to go anywhere w/o the drive plates..... get junk in the bearings...

David:

After I pick up Project 80 from Slee in Golden CO, I had to drive back to CA with no front drive shaft. It was fine, just lock the CDL, remove the front drive shaft and you are good to go. Hell I drove it around like that for a month after I got home.

thanks for all the responses, by the way!

Missed that thread, biut  anyway!

That "D'oh" took a while to load on my dial-up; figured for sure a flip-off was headed my way! ;)

Cheers,

sam that was no rear shaft he bent the rear shaft on the big step on the lockwood trail

I shattered a front uni once on a hill called Transfer Case Hill. Had to remove the shaft to drive home, plus use the CDL. Apart from no traction to get out of the back country and $#!^^% handling in 2wd I had no problems on my 90 model.

Photo was taken about two seconds before the uni broke. As usual the photo doesn't do the steepness of the hill any justice.

What was the handling like?

it's just a little light (loose) in the front. Not bad.

You've got to have a stash of hubs around. I just put hubs on my 94 yesterday. Then you can unlock it. So are you coming through Idaho? I'm not leaving for CM until Tuesday after work. If you get into a bind in the Boise area just holler.

David , No problem. Had my front shaft out for a week, driving highway and everything with no issues. Took me w hile to get to the drive shaft shop to have the U joints replaced.

balancing the shaft will probably do it for you. It is always recommended whenyou swap the U joints or if you are having driveline problems.

Tom Woods has a shop in Moab. And they support TLCA and Cruise Moab.
