I'm putting my '40 back together and have a question about drivehaft orientation. Which direction do the slip-yokes face? The PO had the driveshafts with the slip-yoke ends both facing the front of the car. Is that right?
 
I put my slip yoke closer to the T-case than on the axle.

Its cheaper to replace the non-slip yoke end than it is to replace the slip-yoke end. So I put it up out of the way and partially protected by my skid plate.

Close to the transfercase is correct.

And make sure you have the yokes aligned correctly too:
