Well, I can verify that adjustments both loose or tight have no effect on the binding issue. For clarification, my rebuilt redhead has the original size (not 105) sector shaft. The binding happens every time I return to center from a full passenger direction turn. The bind is closer to center than it is to the end limits of the turn. Frankly it’s scary at times, and needs to be fixed soon as my 17 year old primarily drives it.
Where to source a new 105 gear?
No faith in rebuilt with 105 shafts in them?
I wish I had my original ‘core’ that was returned to redhead… it only had a leak…🫤

Sounds like the sector shaft my be bent or the gear is damaged. Never seen an adjuster screw work loose on its own before. No way to tell in your case without a teardown. Usually if the sector shaft bends without breaking, the shaft seal will leak. Most of the time they twist the splines and break external to the gearbox, but I did take one apart that had a bent shaft from a wreck.

A new 80 box from toyota comes with a 105 sector shat these days, but they are about $1700 + the pitman arm. pn 44110-60212

I have plenty of faith in rebuilt boxes with or without the 105 shaft, so long as they are done right. They are easy, just takes some patience and time. I will be building 2 boxes with 105 shafts next week and will have 2 good sector shafts if you want to take a shot at it yourself. A rebuild is usually just a reseal though, so unless you find a damaged hard part, bearing or the ball screw is missing balls, dont expect a fix.

Is there any noticeable play anywhere in the travel of the box? The easiest way to tell is have someone quickly turn the wheel back and forth with the truck off while you hold your hand on the pitman arm.

Also, if you own a dial indicator, you can somewhat of check the sector shaft for trueness on the truck. More than once I have seen a bent sector shaft on dodge ram 2500/3500 boxes due to people beating the pitman arm off with a hammer rather than using a proper puller.

I pulled the Redhead-rebuilt box out of my storage container and took some pictures today. You can see the gouges in the bore as well as on the power piston. May not look like much but I can assure you this was causing my power steering to completely fail (only in one direction) under load.

I really don't know what caused this but I haven't had any problems since rebuilding my spare box.

Ouch, that’s bad. I’ve never seen one with anywhere near that much damage. How long ago did they rebuild this box?

So I bit the bullet and ordered a new gear box and pitman arm at ~$2200. Easy install and been perfect since with the new part.
I am in the middle of the autopsy of the rebuilt gearbox. Minimal wear lines on piston and cylinder. Sharp edges and a few small burrs on the female threads of the screw.
Question how many bearings are there supposed to be? Search didn’t help me find out. I counted 39 which just seems random?
I’ll keep digging into it and see what else I may find.
