Hi all. The drivers door on my 80 recently stopped opening and after tirelessly trying to find a solution, I took it to Toyota Dealer.

Looks like I need a new door latch, I recently replaced the piece but I guess it was putting too much tension on the spring. Any help finding one would be greatly appreciated!

Describe "stopped opening" in more detail. Is the 80 still with a mechanic until this is fixed or do you have it at home and are you able/willing to look at it yourself?

One common issue is a little spring that breaks and prevents the door from opening. Once you do manage to get the door open and access the latch mechanism the fix is easy as the end coil from the spring can be bent over to give the spring a new hook.

Drop this into Google for more information:

Neither the inside or outside handle will open the door, and the outside handle doesn’t “catch” like it normally does when it’s unlocked, it just pulled like it normally would if locked (I hope that makes sense). I can hear the unlocking mechanisms doing its thing.

Toyota was able to get the door open and apart. Let me call them for a better description of the problem.

I am happy to try and solve it myself, I just couldn’t open the thing.

Just spoke with the dealer.. sounds like the spring is blowing out the back of the plastic housing and that’s what is causing it to break. I put this part on 4 months ago and it already broke. The dealer thinks I’ll go through the same issue with a replacement part..(I’m not convinced they know what they’re talking about) Any tips?

I'm not clear on what that means.

It's a common problem for the little spring in the door mechanism to break. When it happened on my 80 neither the inside or outside handles worked. I got the door open by removing the door card (with the door closed) and then manipulating the mechanism directly. Once I found the broken spring it was an easy fix and has lasted 9 years and counting.

I don't know if you have the same problem but if you do follow the google search I shared above, read through the discussions until you understand the issue. From there you should be able to fix this yourself or have a clear conversation with the tech working on your 80 to determine what the problem is and the best way to fix it. If it's just the little spring you don't even need new parts to get rolling, if it's something else then what you need will vary.

Good luck.

Apparently the spring has been “blowing out” this yellow plastic and causing the door latch to stop functioning.

Sounds like no one’s encountered this, but it’s happened twice now on my 80. Decided to replace the whole latch (Thanks @swamp-thing )!Curious what some of you would have done, or if thats the only option.

I’m assuming my replacement part that I used was just faulty/weak at this point because I can’t see what would on the door would cause that to keep happening. It only lasted about 4 months.

Is the OP discussing the known issue when a coil spring of the door lock actuator presses against the (too thin) side of the plastic which wears through over time then blows out??

If that's the same issue the problem is under the metal plate (see photos)

Here's one thread, there are others:

You nailed it @Kernal. That’s exactly the thread I needed, wish I would’ve found it sooner.

I’ll be saving that for future reference, or in case someone else post this issue. Perfect!

A few people have tried to fixed the issue, IIRC one person may have installed a short piece of metal with epoxy to fix the blown out plastic edge?
Search and you'll find it.

Or, search Classifieds or Salvage yards for a used part. IDK if anyone is currently making an aftermarket replacement for the front actuator, it was discussed
recently.

I'm having a similar problen with the drivers door on my 1995 Toyota Landcruiser. Does anyone know what the part number is for the door latch?

I sourced mine from @swamp-thing. Not sure what the part number is but he was great. Shipped it super fast and solid on pricing. Not sure if he has more lying around but I am sure he can assist!

I ended up getting one from Dubai through ebay. Not sure what they had new parts there, but I received it and it's working fine. The part number was 69040-60031

@GregMacd : which model/year (and region) Land Cruiser are you working on?
Was the replacement door lock assembly/motor exactly the same as the original?

The part number for a US Spec FZJ80L Front Left door lock assembly/motor appears to be 69040-60041 (but discontinued)

When checking part number 69040-60031 it does not show up in a (US based) search, only UAE or Japan.

I bought the 69040-60031 through eBay from Dubai. I installed it. It does NOT function the same as 69040-60041. I removed the alarm years ago, so no fob. I unlock with the key from outside. That works. When I lock with the switch on the armrest it locks and won't close. I have to lock with the key from outside.

My original works, but it is not moving the linkage its full motion. I'm thinking going the new motor route if I can't find a better used one.

Hope this helps,
Dan
